Our 4–5 year olds explored identity and creativity through self-portraits! Each child looked closely at their own reflection, noticing details like eye color, hair texture, and expressions. In the Reggio Emilia approach, art is more than a product — it’s a process of discovery. Through drawing themselves, children reflect on who they are, how they see the world, and what makes them unique. 🎨🪞

This hands-on experience nurtures fine motor skills, observation, confidence, and self-awareness — all essential parts of early learning and growing as capable, expressive individuals.

At ages 4–5, children are strengthening the small muscles in their hands, wrists, and fingers — the very same muscles they’ll use for holding a pencil, forming letters, and controlling their movements on paper. Activities like playing with playdough, threading beads, using tweezers, cutting with scissors, stacking blocks, or squeezing sponges all help refine these fine motor skills.

This kind of hands-on play develops coordination, strength, and control — the foundation for confident, comfortable writing later on. When children pinch, press, twist, or roll objects, they’re not just having fun; they’re building the neural pathways and motor patterns that make writing flow naturally.

So next time you see your preschooler busy at play, know that every squeeze, snip, and squish is helping them grow into a capable writer.
