MBA Student Spotlight: More than a degree, it’s a launchpad for what’s next.

Emery Smith | MBA ’24 - Business Owner & U.S. Air Force Veteran

Transitioning from military member to business leader takes more than ambition; it takes clarity, confidence, and the ability to translate experience into action.

For Emery Smith, the MBA wasn’t just about learning concepts; it was about applying them in real time to build something new.

Today, he is developing a video game startup, Static Leap Studios, applying both his military experience and MBA training to bring new ideas to market.

MBA Student Spotlight: Flexibility That Works, No Matter Your Path

Ryan Berg, U.S. Air Force Reserve, 96th Airlift Squadron (Minnesota) | MBA ’24

While balancing military service, full-time work, and an uncertain start date for Air Force pilot training, Ryan earned his MBA through the UW MBA Consortium in just over one year. He shared that his bandwidth for coursework varied drastically from week to week, making the program’s flexibility essential to his success.

A powerful example of what’s possible when a program is built around real life.

Their Experience Is Their Advantage: Military Students in the MBA

Military-connected MBA students are balancing more than coursework; they’re navigating benefits, service commitments, and life transitions all at once. In a recent conversation with Miranda Cross-Schindler, our Adult and Military Service Manager, a few key insights stood out:

▪️ Finding the starting point can be challenging → Many students look for guidance to navigate education benefits
▪️ No two journeys look the same → Personalized support makes all the difference
▪️ Military experience translates directly → Leadership, communication, adaptability, and problem-solving strengthen success in the MBA
▪️ The transition back to school can be uncertain → But those military experiences are a powerful advantage

This Military Appreciation Month, we recognize not only the service of our military-connected students, but also the unique perspectives and strengths they bring to our program.

🎥 Hear from Miranda below, a veteran herself who now works to support this community in our program.

We kicked off 2026 with an incredible opportunity for our MBA students to explore business, culture, and global leadership across Panama and Costa Rica. Over ten days, our students engaged directly with industry leaders, discovered regional approaches to innovation and sustainability, and applied their MBA skills in dynamic real-world contexts. From the strategic trade corridors of Panama to the sustainability-focused business landscape of Costa Rica, this experience offered a meaningful immersion into two of Central America’s most influential economic environments.

One of the most memorable moments was visiting the Embera Drua Village. Traveling by boat to meet community leaders and learning about shared governance and communal resource management brought leadership, ethics, and stewardship to life in a powerful way.

We extend our appreciation to Austral Education Group for supporting this year’s coordination. Building on this year’s experience, we remain committed to creating international learning opportunities that expand global awareness, deepen strategic understanding, and empower our students to lead with confidence in an increasingly interconnected world.
