Our Story

Youth Leadership Camp (YLC) as we know it, was developed in the summer of 2001 and was named Hmong Youth Leadership Pre-College Camp. The name was eventually changed to Youth Leadership Camp to better represent all scholars that the camp served.

YLC is a dynamic and well attended two-week summer camp for middle school and high school youth at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. The camp was created by a student intern in the Office of Multicultural Affairs named Nkauj Hnub Thoj, with the guidance and support of Charles Vue, Associate Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs. The camp was designed as a college-prep summer camp that had an emphasis on Hmong history, culture, and identity. YLC also included English, Math, Science, Art, and other academic courses to support and prepare its scholars for higher education.

Overall, YLC has a deep connection with the communities it serves. Many of the scholars learned about the camp through family and community connections. YLC also gained many of its scholars through other Wisconsin Educational Opportunity Programs (WEOP). The camp is continuously growing its community connections to better serve its scholars.

YLC is a two-week, on-campus summer program. It is designed to serve 35-45 middle to high school-aged students. The goals of the camp are as follow:
