Thank you to everyone for attending last night's workshop for The Small and The Mighty: Chippewa Valley!

Keiko Morikawa from the Japanese Outreach Initiative at UW-Stout taught two workshops so far: Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, and last night's Yukata Try-On Event

🖌 The final workshop, Creating with Brush and Ink: a Calligraphy experience, is on Tues, Oct 13th at 4PM. Open to anyone in the Chippewa Valley 12 and up, but registration is required. See the library's homepage for registration and details

Everyone is also welcome to the opening reception of The Small and The Mighty tomorrow night!

Exhibit Information:

We are proud to host “The Small and The Mighty: Chippewa Valley” - an art exhibition and programming that brings together local and US history through archival research at McIntyre Library.

The artists discovered information on Clarice Chase Dunn, Pearle Robinson, Eleanor Jones, and Sarah Harder, and the pieces in this exhibit connect to the lives of these four individuals.

Clarice Chase Dunn was a teacher at Heart Mountain, Wyoming — a Japanese American incarceration center during World War II. Several pieces in this exhibit seek to immerse and expose viewers to the incarceration of Japanese Americans. From pieces reminiscent of living quarters during incarceration to sculptures tied to Dunn and Heart Mountain, this exhibit offers an avenue to further educate on incarceration. In conjunction with the exhibit, artists’ books from a Seattle Immersion program on incarceration in the Pacific Northwest will be displayed.

This programming is sponsored by UWEC’s McIntyre Library and the Japanese Outreach Initiative at UW-Stout, and was made possible with a grant from the Center for Restorative and Racial Justice.

Congratulations to all of our Library After Dark passport scavenger hunt winners!

Students traveled around the library to different locations and got a stamp, drew a specific symbol, or wrote down the answer to a question. For every 3 boxes filled out on the passport, they received entries for a prize! This year, we had awesome UWEC hammocks, blankets-in-a-bag, or glass water bottles thanks to the UWEC Blugold Welcome team.

We had so many winners we needed to make TWO Instagram posts for all the photos. This post is 2 of 2, so if you don't see yourself here, be sure to check the other post!

Blugold Makerspace Workshop: Electronics for Makers

💡Mondays, 2:00 - 5:00 PM

Ever wanted to make something electronic but didn’t know where to start? Electronics for Makers is a hands-on workshop series where you’ll build real devices while gradually learning the electronics, programming, and troubleshooting skills behind them.

Each session stands on its own, so you can drop in for one workshop or come back all year. No prior electronics/Arduino/programming experience is necessary.

You’ll build things that glow, move, make music, sense the world, collect data, and communicate wirelessly, and experiment with microcontrollers, sensors, motors, LEDs, audio, circuit boards, and more!

When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka

Julie Otsuka’s debut novel, When the Emperor Was Divine, follows an unnamed Japanese American family as they navigate the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII. Told in five parts, each from a family member’s perspective, the novel paints a picture of the Japanese American experience during WWII. Using this novel, this book club seeks to have an open discussion about this moment in US history, as well as its relevance in contemporary conversations.

“The Small and Mighty: Chippewa Valley”

We are proud to host “The Small and Mighty: Chippewa Valley” - an art exhibition and programming that brings together local and US history through archival research at McIntyre Library.
