Dear OISD Community,

We want to provide some context regarding the presence of a Sheriff’s Deputy on campus this morning, as we know seeing law enforcement at school can naturally raise questions or concerns.

The Sheriff’s Department has been receiving numerous community complaints regarding traffic concerns in the area around campus, including speeding and other traffic violations. As a result, deputies were in the area conducting routine traffic patrols. During that time, a deputy responded to an isolated traffic-related incident that occurred outside of school and briefly came onto campus as part of that response.

There was no threat to the school or our students, and the incident was unrelated to school operations.

We appreciate the Sheriff’s Department’s partnership in helping keep our school community and surrounding roads safe. We also appreciate everyone’s continued attention to safe driving and responsible behavior around campus.

Strategic Planning: Building Our Future Together

The Orcas Island School District is beginning a new Strategic Planning process to help shape the future of our schools. The goal is to celebrate what’s working, identify opportunities for growth, and establish clear priorities that improve experiences and outcomes for students.

Your voice matters! Listening sessions are being held for students, staff, families, caregivers, and community members to share their ideas, experiences, and hopes for the future. What we hear will help shape the district’s Mission, Vision, Core Values, and 3–5 key priorities for the years ahead.

To the staff, families, and community of Orcas Island Schools:

I want to share that Mike Alperin, Director for District #2, has resigned from the Orcas Island School District Board of Directors.
Mike joined the Board in May 2025 and has been a valued member of our team, bringing his thoughtful perspective, professional experience, and commitment to the students and families of Orcas Island. He has also played an important role in spearheading the start of the Board's strategic planning work as we prepare for the District's next Strategic Plan.

Mike is a physician whose professional responsibilities off island have continued to grow. In his resignation letter, Mike shared that a combination of existing and newly acquired responsibilities required him to make some difficult choices about his commitments, including stepping away from his position on the School Board. He also noted that making the change now allows the Board to adjust responsibilities before the Strategic Plan really begins to take shape.

On behalf of the entire Board, I want to thank Mike for his service to Orcas Island Schools. Serving on a school board is an unpaid, volunteer position that requires a significant commitment of time, travel, and energy, and we are grateful for everything Mike has contributed during his time with us. We wish him and his family all the best.

The Board has a clear process for filling the vacancy, and our work will continue without interruption. At our September 22 meeting, the Board will formally accept Mike's resignation and begin discussing the qualities and experience we hope to find in our next Director. At our October 27 meeting, we plan to invite community input on what they would like to see in their next School Board Director. The District #2 position will then open for applications beginning October 28.

We will share additional information about the application and appointment process when the position opens. In the meantime, our Board remains focused on the work ahead and on our shared commitment to the students, staff, and families of Orcas Island Schools.

Dear Families and Guardians,

It’s almost time to get back together! We’re excited to welcome our students back for the 2026–27 school year and have a few special events planned to make the first day extra fun.

Wednesday, August 26 — First Day of School!

8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

We’ll kick things off with a noon dismissal on our first day as students settle into classrooms, reconnect with friends, and get the new school year underway.

Then, the fun continues:

12:45 p.m. — Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Join us by the road outside the cafeteria at 12:45 p.m. as we celebrate our beautiful new site work—including that brand-new asphalt!

1:00–4:00 p.m. — Back-to-School Celebration & Resource Fair

Stick around after the ribbon-cutting for an afternoon of community, connection, and fun!

Where: School Cafeteria, Old Gym & Middle School Courtyard

Come enjoy:
-Games and activities (hosted by our Funhouse Team)
-Free hotdogs, berry cobbler, and ice cream
-Community resources and connections
