I am often asked- "Is there something I can donate to the school?"
The past few days I have noticed our teacher snack reserves taking a nose dive. Which is great! But are definitely accepting snack donations.
Whether it is due to food insecurity or simply poor planning on the teenagers ("oh yeah, Im going to have to eat again before I get back home at 2:30 or later") kids seem to be forever in need of a snack or two throughout the day.
We have a lovely food pantry that is always open to donations and definitely does get utilized. However, most pantry items require boiling water or an extra level of cooking that sometimes can't happen at school.
Snacks like granola bars, peanut butter crackers, pop tarts, microwave mac n' cheese cups, ramen noodles, toast with PB, fresh fruit... are all huge hits amongst the students. They pretty much eat anything. I am forever impressed with their palettes.
Of course we encourage better planning for lunch and taking advantage of our free lunch program, but life happens. Sometimes you would rather go hungry than risk seeing your crush with their crush at the lunch table. Teen logic is a phenomenon I have yet to completely comprehend as well.
Whether the hunger is from need or from developing better habits... the hunger is there. So if you are in the mood to give food... drop on by, send me an e-mail ([email protected]), call us (853-6254), whatever works!
Forever grateful for our community,
