This is going to be awesome, GO OYSTERCORPS!

The Conservation Corps of the Forgotten Coast will learn about oyster aquaculture first-hand this year. Through a partnership with the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, Rattlesnake Cove Oyster Company, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) Division of Aquaculture, and the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory the Corps will build and tend an aquaculture demonstration lease over the upcoming year. Cage building started last week and deployment of the cages the second week of December.
The program is made possible by an grant from the NOAA and the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). The eeBLUE aquaculture literacy grant will enable students in the Conservation Corps to experience the opportunities, benefits, and challenges of oyster aquaculture through direct engagement with local experts, as well as NOAA and NAAEE resources. Now in its 6th year, CCFEC has a history of completing significant environmental restoration projects, responding to disasters, and meeting critical community needs. CCFEC has employed, trained and provided service opportunities to over 250 young adults. They have earned over 1200 industry certifications, completed over 200 conservation/construction projects, and responded to 8 regional disasters including the pandemic. Currently there are crews working across the Panhandle from Pensacola to Tallahassee. ED Corps High School has graduated 28 members to date and is now in its second year as a private high school. OysterCorps will cover the region from “Cola to Cola” (Apalachicola to Pensacola) beginning October 1st, focused on oyster habitat restoration, coastal resilience and economic diversification through aquaculture! Also beginning October 1st. BoriCorps will Kickoff in Puerto Rico welcoming 10 additional members to work at El Morro National Monument in Old San Juan! Everyday gets better!

This is the first in what will become a long list of “thank yous”! A huge thank you to our Franklin's Promise Coalition, Inc. Board Member, Susan Bassett and her business partner, Shelley Shepard for their commitment to make the training center a reality and to provide a home for the Conservation Corps of the Forgotten Coast, Conservation Corps of the Emerald Coast, ED Corps High School and all of our Coalition programs! They worked hard to make the deal happen and along with their broker, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Beach Properties of Florida, together they deserve a big shout out!
