Our McKelvy Scholar of the week is Recep Celebi '17 (pictured left). Recep was born and raised in the beautiful city of Istanbul, Turkey, where he graduated from Robert College, the post prestigious high school in the country. He was also a major driving force behind our planned house trip to Istanbul in three weeks. He's a Math major, who plans to pursue his love for numbers in Graduate School. When he's not slaying Math problems, Recep can be seen in the kitchen working on the complex process of making Turkish Coffee, and loves sharing it with House members. Recep's respect for others, and his genuinely sweet nature with undertones of sass is what makes him an invaluable member of the house. As he spends his semester abroad in Budapest, Hungary, we wish him good luck and hope he's back before we know it.

Our McKelvy Scholar of the week is Will Feldman '18. Will spent most of his high school years in DC, before spending a year at Hotchkiss. He's a Policy Studies major, who plans on graduating with a Finance Certificate. Spending the better half of his Winter Break in Israel, on Birthright, he deems camel riding as the definite highlight of the trip. He's a member of the DKE fraternity, a member of the Investment Club and serves McKelvy as Treasurer. His roommate believes his presence "adds balance to the house's composition" and terms him an "asset to the house". Will's also very excited about his second, all expenses paid, international trip of the year, as he plans on joining other McKelvyites on their Spring Break trip to Istanbul. Although he will be moving to DKE for a semester before studying abroad next year, he's planning on returning to McKelvy for his senior year, and we sincerely hope he does.

McKelvy Scholars voted overwhelmingly to use house funds to go on an educational trip to Istanbul, under the guidance of our Faculty Advisor Professor Goshgarian. It was an especially bold move given the common misconceptions that have resulted from the recent geopolitical situation of the region. It would be an excellent opportunity for students to reflect on some of the pressing cultural, political and religious issues of the region, as well as educate themselves on what has been for centuries the bridge between East and West.

From Kenya to Kansas, our scholars come from the most different of places. They are also actively involved on campus, from Hillel to Student Government. Close to a third of our community is comprised of Students of Jewish and Muslim origin, and our newest scholar is an active member of Newman. Despite being so different, what makes us a strong community is our passion to learn and understand different perspectives.
