Williston Northampton School celebrated another major milestone on our journey to building a new Academic Center on campus after a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony October 2.

The event featured remarks from Head of School Robert Hill, Board of Trustees members Rich Monopoli ’89 and Kevin Hoben ’65, and Philip Chen of Annum Architects. Representatives from O&G Industries and CSL Consulting also helped celebrate the groundbreaking.

“We’ve seen the tremendous impact that our new Residential Quad has had on our community,” Hill said. “This new center will do the same thing for our academic program, which is at the heart of everything we do here.”

The Academic Quad was alive with the sound of music last week as we welcomed Gustavo Moradel 🇭🇳🇺🇸 to campus as part of our Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. Students sat for a dinner on the Academic Quad as Gustavo performed, then got in on the action afterward as we danced into study hall.

Thanks for coming out, Gustavo! đź’šđź’™

Sometimes beautiful things rise up from our darkest moments. For Jeffrey Dorman ’06, two harrowing years spent in a pediatric hospital as his daughter recovered from leukemia left him searching for his own kind of healing, and spurred the creation of the Feeding Families Foundation.

Their mission is simple and fundamental: provide free meals at pediatric hospitals to caregivers looking after their children. A pilot program launched at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital has now rolled out to six hospitals across the country, with more to come.

“Everybody on the unit is in the same boat. They’re all nervous, all anxious. They have zero control of the outcome,” says Jeff, who was awarded Williston’s Trailblazer Award during Reunion 2026. “Our goal is to make a bad situation just a little bit better.”

Along the way, Jeff has also leaned on his Williston family for support. Classmates David Borowsky and Joe Wold joined the founding Board, and David Fontaine ’06, of Fontaine Bros., recently made a major gift through the Fontaine Community Foundation.

We are celebrating 10 years of the Grum Project on campus, and our first visiting artist this year helped us create an art installation out of cardboard.

Kiel Johnson worked with our students to create cardboard letters, each uniquely crafted, that will spell put the final stanza of our alma mater, "O Williston."

“It’s not so much about the finished product as it is the social aspect of working together to achieve a larger goal,” Johnson said. “And that’s the other thing about my projects that I try to build—a lot of people do workshops where you leave with your mask or you leave with your little painting or you leave with the basket you made. I try to do these projects where you really don’t leave with anything but the memories and the experience, and you leave a little something to create a bigger, beautiful thing as a group.”

Thanks for spending time creating with us, Kiel!

Stay tuned to see where we're hanging the stanza đź‘€

The voices Williston students hear during their time on campus stick with them well beyond graduation, whether it was the inspirational speech in the locker room or the quick pick-me-up chat before a major test. The Williston Northampton Fund makes possible those experiences of encouragement, guidance, and inspiration as students start their journeys to being the leaders of tomorrow.

Our 186th Convocation ceremony was a fantastic way to formally start our academic year. We were honored to have Seth Kassels ’97 back on campus to speak to students, and class of 2027 president Sam Dietrich also provided some great insights for students as the year gets going.

We also honored three teachers during the ceremony with instructorships or chairs:

- Adam Sussbauer was awarded the Emily N. McFadden Vincent ’49 and Bob E. Vincent Instructorship
- Stefania Nugteren was awarded the George E. Gregory and Catherine B. Gregory Instructorship
- Patrick Loftus was awarded the Henry M. ’52 and Judith M. Zachs Chair

Last week we reignited a Northampton School for Girls tradition, bringing back Phoenix Night.

Originally established in 1928, Phoenix Night invited NSFG students to reflect on challenges, regrets, fears, or old beliefs they wished to leave behind. Gathering around a fire, they would write those thoughts on slips of paper and cast them into the flames, symbolically letting go and looking ahead with renewed confidence.

On Friday, our Women of Williston group brought the spirit of the night back to life, hosting the event in front of Emily McFadon Vincent House. We had students, faculty members, and a few Head's Visiting Council members in attendance, and each took the chance to write down something they're leaving behind before putting the note card in the fire.
