This is the kind of information that makes RFK Jr.’s vaccine rhetoric not merely ignorant, but dangerous. Vaccines have produced some of the greatest public-health achievements in human history. We forget what these diseases did precisely because vaccines worked so well. Undermining confidence in them risks teaching us that history all over again.

We had a scientist once who beat the most feared disease of American childhood and refused to get rich off the cure. His name was Jonas Salk. On April 12, 1955, the day his polio vaccine was declared safe and effective, Edward R. Murrow asked him on national television who held the patent.
"Well, the people, I would say," Salk answered. "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?"
Understand what polio was.
Every summer it came back, and every summer parents kept their children away from pools and movie theaters and prayed. At its peak it paralyzed more than 20,000 American children in a single year.
Hospital wards were lined with iron lungs. A president had run the country from a wheelchair because of it.
And if you grew up in the 1950s, you know exactly what happened next, because you were there. The line in the school gymnasium. The rolled-up sleeve. The nurse, the cotton ball, your mother's face when it was over.
The research was funded by the March of Dimes, which means it was paid for a dime at a time, by schoolchildren and mothers going door to door. When Salk said the people owned the vaccine, he wasn't being modest. He was being accurate. You paid for it.
A Forbes analysis later put the fortune he walked away from at around seven billion dollars. Historians note the foundation's lawyers doubted a patent was even possible. It didn't matter. He never tried to find out. The formula went out free to any company that could make it.
America believed in the shot so completely that Elvis Presley rolled up his sleeve backstage at The Ed Sullivan Show, cameras flashing, so teenagers would follow.
That was the country we were.
Here is the country we are. This week, the Senate dragged Anthony Fauci, 85 years old, through a hearing built to trap him, then scheduled a contempt vote because he stayed silent.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the man now running our health agencies, fired all 17 members of the government's vaccine advisory committee in a single day, and rewrote the childhood vaccine schedule before a federal judge blocked it.
And measles, a disease this country declared eliminated in 2000, is back. As of the CDC's latest count: 2,318 cases this year, the most since 1991. Ninety-three percent of the people who caught it were unvaccinated or had no record of a shot.
Salk's generation looked at a virus that hunted children and wiped it out of American life, then handed the cure to the world for free.
Seventy-one years later, Salk's answer is still the best one an American ever gave to the question of what we owe each other.
Could you patent the sun?

We uh… we did it?
I’m usually one to root for the underdog, but in this case the underdog is a completely avoidable harm to children.
So, maybe we should root against this particular underdog and proceed with elimination again.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ended required federal tracking of a parasite called cyclospora, and a year later it has torn through more than 11,000 Americans across 41 states. It has you running to the bathroom floor for weeks at a time.
Not days. Weeks. Untreated, it can run a month or longer.
And it fakes you out. The symptoms lift, you go back to work, and then they come back.
Most labs will not even find the thing. A routine test misses cyclospora completely. Catching it takes a PCR test that a doctor has to know to order. So 11,000 is the floor. Nobody in America knows the real number.
Senator Jon Ossoff wrote to Kennedy on July 16 with one question. Why did you stop counting. He gave him 72 hours. Kennedy said nothing, so Ossoff wrote again and called it a "foolish and self-indulgent demolition" of public health programs.
The FDA still cannot say what made anyone sick.
Investigators followed shredded iceberg lettuce from a plant in central Mexico to Taco Bell counters in five states. One sample came back positive, and then the agency admitted the positive was its own lab error.
The rule that would have forced companies to hand over their supply chain records within 24 hours was pushed back to 2028.
Kennedy walked up to a microphone Tuesday and said the outbreak is "under control." He said criticism of his cuts is "invalid," because what he removed was "redundant surveillance."
At least 98 people have been hospitalized. Thousands more are counting the days between relapses. Kennedy's word for that is control.

CIDRAP Op-Ed: When you get what you wish for: How anti-vax advocacy is making Big Pharma bigger My daughter is an animal lover in the truest sense. Our house is essentially a zoo of stuffed creatures—capybaras, axolotls, highland cows, you name it. When she discovered Squishmallows, my wallet felt it immediately. I gently pushed back and encouraged her to reconsider, and my gracious girl too...
