Thirty kids in a line, all shouting "please don't call me that" at the same time.
Every one of them is loud. Every one of them holds eye contact. Nobody struggles even slightly.
That is on purpose. It is the bottom rung and it is supposed to be easy, because a pack feels safe and we are not testing anyone yet. We are making a deposit. The child has now said the words out loud in their own voice, which means it has stopped being a thing they only heard about.
Then one kid does it alone, facing an instructor they have trained with for three years. Still safe. A child who has known you since they were six is not actually afraid of you, and that is exactly why they can do it.
Nobody climbs until the rung they are standing on has gotten boring.
