The UMass Cranberry Station

The UMass Cranberry Station The UMass Cranberry Station, part of UMass Amherst, is located in East Wareham, MA.

The research station provides extension and outreach services to over 400 cranberry growers. Research is at the heart of all endeavors at the Cranberry Station, fueling our ability to provide excellent, science-based information to cranberry growers. Station scientists are leaders in the cranberry research community and in their academic disciplines. Our programs are supported by UMass Amherst, in

cluding UMass Extension, the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station and the Center for Agriculture Food and the Environment. Our programs receive additional financial support in the form of grants from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, US-EPA, USDA-NIFA, USDA-ARS, and Cranberry grower organizations. In its 100 year history, the Cranberry Station and its scientific staff have seen many changes in cranberry growing as a result of research and outreach efforts. Some of the major milestones include the development of the frost forecasting system and determination of cranberry hardiness levels, insect monitoring and modern IPM programs, introduction of modern cultivars, the use of biological control agents for cranberry pests, modern fertility management programs, effective weed management combining cultural control with post-emergence herbicide use, and effective disease prediction and management programs.
