Today’s episode of “Things I’m Doing Instead of the 472 Things I Should Actually Be Doing to Open a Childcare Center” 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

First up… POWER WASHING. 💦

Did the play yard desperately need to be power washed before the play surface goes in? Yes.

Was it also ridiculously satisfying watching all that grime disappear? ABSOLUTELY. 😂

Could I have been answering emails, finishing paperwork, organizing classrooms, working on policies, preparing for licensing, hiring staff, or tackling approximately 4,927 other things?

Also yes. 😬

Then, because apparently I enjoy avoiding my actual to-do list, I moved inside and started priming our custom infant changing table. 😂🎨

Again… was this the most urgent thing on the list?

Nope.

Did I stand there admiring it afterward like I had just accomplished something monumental?

YOU BET I DID. 🤣👏🏼

At this point I’m basically just wandering around Scribbles finding projects that give me immediate satisfaction while my actual to-do list quietly judges me from across the room. 😂

Butttttt… the play yard is CLEAN, the changing table is getting closer to finished, and every random little project means we’re one step closer. 🥹🖍️❤️

Productive procrastination still counts as productivity, right?! 🤪

We all work around here. 😂🫡

No free rides at Scribbles, people.

One kid is hauling playground padding like he’s been on the construction crew since demo day… the other is out here pressure washing like she has a mortgage and bills due. 😂😂

Meanwhile, I’m supervising… which is basically management. 💅🤣

At this point, if you’re related to me, you’ve probably been handed a tool, a paintbrush, a hose, a tape measure, or something heavy and told, “Come on… we’re almost done.” 🤪

Building a childcare center: a family bonding experience nobody asked for. 😂❤️

But seriously… little by little, EVERYONE has had a hand in bringing this crazy dream to life. 🥹🖍️❤️

One year ago today… 😳

I walked into this old bank and thought, “Okay… I think I can see the vision.” 😂

Spoiler alert: I could NOT see the vision. 🤣

I saw teller counters. Carpet. Offices. A random refrigerator. Approximately 47,000 things that needed to be ripped out… and a bank account that had absolutely no idea what was coming. 💸🤪

Fast forward ONE YEAR…

Now I see it. 🥹❤️

I see classrooms. I see cribs. I see tiny tables and chairs. I see teachers laughing with kids. I see families walking through the doors. I see little hands making giant messes. I see Scribbles.

It’s crazy looking at these pictures because this place barely resembles the building I walked into a year ago.

And somehow, through construction, permits, inspections, plumbing, flooring, fencing, approximately 927 decisions and several “WHAT HAVE I DONE?!” moments… the vision actually became real. 😂

A year ago, I was trying to imagine it.

Today, I’m standing in it. 🥹🖍️❤️

And fast forward another year?! 🤪🙄
I can’t even imagine what these walls will have seen by then.

Another AMAZING day of interviews at Scribbles! 🥹🖍️💛

There are some seriously incredible educators out there just waiting for us to open our doors, and after today, I am even MORE excited about the team we’re building.

I’ll admit it…I was SO nervous about interviewing people. 😂 Like, why am I sitting on this side of the table asking the questions?! Who put me in charge?! 🤣

But then I realized something…

THEY’RE NERVOUS TOO. 😂

So apparently my interviewing technique is:

1. Ask a professional question.
2. Make an inappropriate amount of jokes.
3. Get everyone laughing.
4. Suddenly we’re just having a conversation.
5. They leave thinking, “Yahhhh…I think I like this place.” 😂

And honestly? That’s exactly what I wanted.

I don’t want Scribbles to just have employees. I want educators who laugh together, support each other, love these littles fiercely, and genuinely WANT to come to work every day. ❤️

We had some really great conversations today with some really great people, and I’m feeling incredibly thankful.

Our little Scribbles family is starting to come together. 🥹🖍️

Remember those lovely pipes running right through the room? 😂 Well… BYE, PIPES. 👋

They are officially covered AND we gained a completely usable changing table in the process! 🙌🏻

I absolutely LOVE how this came out. It still needs some paint and a little Scribbles magic 🪄🎨… but WHAT A DIFFERENCE.

Every single weird little obstacle in this building has somehow turned into something useful. 😂

One more project checked off the never-ending Scribbles list. ✔️
We are getting SO CLOSE. 🥹🖍️💛

SIXTY. ONE. families.

I just stared at this number for a minute because… what?! 🥹

Wayyyyy back when Scribbles was still mostly an idea in my head, my goal was 25 kiddos on my interest list. I remember thinking, “If I can get 25 interested, maybe half will actually enroll and I can make this little dream work.”

That was the goal.

Today there are 61 families interested in trusting me and Scribbles with their babies.

Anddddd here come the emotions. 😭😂

Because behind that little number on a screen are 61 families who read about what I’m trying to create — a place where kids can PLAY, get messy, laugh, explore, be loved, and most importantly… be little — and thought, “I want that for my child.”

That part hits me HARD.

I left a career I loved because I believed childhood was becoming something it was never supposed to be. I had this crazy idea that maybe I could build a place where I could do things differently.

My philosophy.
My mission.
My rules.
Kids first. Always.

And apparently 61 families said, “Yep. We’re here for it.” 🥹

I am excited. I am terrified. I am grateful beyond words.

And I am also starting to think that perhaps my original business plan of “hopefully I can find like 12 kids” was slightly pessimistic. 😂😂😂

This seems to be the time of year when I miss teaching the most.

Setting up a classroom. Putting up cubby tags. Labeling EVERYTHING. Organizing supplies. Moving things around 47 times until every little corner feels just right. 😂 Getting the room ready and imagining all the little faces that will soon fill it.

I miss that part. A lot.

But then I remember what came next.

I remember what we were expecting these little kids to do at an age when, in my heart, I knew it was simply too much. I remember feeling like childhood was becoming something we needed to rush through instead of something we needed to protect.

And then I remember why I left.

Now, three years after this picture was taken, I’m sitting here just weeks away from opening my very own school. 🥹

My philosophy.
My mission.
My rules.

A place where play isn’t something we squeeze in after the “real learning” is finished.

Play IS the real learning.

A place where kids can be curious, messy, creative, silly, loud, imaginative and little.

A place where we meet children where they are instead of constantly asking them to be somewhere they’re not ready to be yet.

Am I excited? Beyond words.

Am I grateful? More than I could ever explain.

Am I absolutely terrified? YUP. 😂

But looking at this picture today feels a little different.

I didn’t know it then, but maybe I wasn’t walking away from teaching.

Maybe I was walking toward the way I always believed children should be taught. ❤️🖍️

And now I get to build it.
