Ikken hisatsu – one punch kills – is the essence of karate. Put everything – your whole life – into one punch. Masami Tsuruoka

In our politically correct society, we don’t hear the phrase “one punch – one kill” much anymore. You are much more likely to hear things such as strike here, there, and here, and you will score a point, but if you draw blood you will be disqualified.

Martial arts have become more of a sport than what they were meant to be, which is a way to defend yourself against deadly assaults. They were never meant to be a sport or a fun activity for kids. The martial arts were deadly serious; they weren’t meant as some sort of game, but that is exactly what they have become in today’s world for many people.

Many of today’s martial artists see traditional arts as either strictly a form of art or just boring and outdated. They neglect the fact that when these arts originated, they were not for competition, sport, or hobby; they were for combat. The fact that many people see traditional martial arts as outdated simply shows their lack of understanding of these arts. Has the art of hand-to-hand combat changed so much that old techniques are only useful for tournaments?

The old techniques were not developed to look flashy or to show one’s flexibility. They were developed to destroy one’s enemy as efficiently as possible. The “kiai” of the warrior was not originally meant to be yelled as loud and as long as possible to earn points in a tournament, but rather to focus all of one’s energy into a single blow, a blow meant to kill.

Don’t confuse a sport black belt with the black belt of a true warrior; there is a huge difference between the two.
