New this year: Only CLEAR BACKPACKS are allowed at Lincoln Middle, Mason/Clark Middle, Bush Alternative Center, and East St. Louis Senior High School. Alternatively, students may use binders.

Clear backpacks are available for purchase from a number of retailers, including Personal Touch Boutique in East St. Louis, Walmart, Target, Amazon, and others. The backpack plastic must be completely transparent, but the straps to carry them do not have to meet this requirement. Students are allowed to carry a non-clear pouch or purse no larger than 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches to hold personal items, such as hygiene products or cellphones.

Traditional, colored backpacks are still allowed at the preschool and elementary levels as well as at the Younge School of Excellence.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR LINCOLN MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILIES

August 13, 2022

Dear Lincoln Middle School Families,

We had planned that all Lincoln Middle School students would participate in an e-learning day on Monday, August 15, 2022. This is due to the fact that we are addressing an issue of mold in some areas of Lincoln Middle School.

As shared with you in our communication on August 11, 2022, Lincoln Middle School families were asked to pick up chromebooks at the Board of Education building on either Friday, August 12 or Saturday, August 13 to ensure they were prepared for e-learning on August 15th, the first day of school.

Unfortunately, only a small number of Lincoln students picked up their chromebook. Due to this factor and ongoing cleaning efforts at Lincoln Middle School, the in-person start of school will be delayed by one week for Lincoln Middle School only, beginning on August 22, 2022. No e-learning will be held this week.

Starting school a week later at Lincoln Middle will result in an amended school calendar for Lincoln Middle School students and staff. We will communicate the new calendar once it is finalized. Due to the later start for Lincoln, School District 189 will have two approved calendars, one for Lincoln Middle School and one for the other district schools.

Lincoln Middle School families may come to pickup a chromebook at the following times and location:

Chromebook Pick-Up for Lincoln Middle School Families Only
Board of Education Building (1005 State Street)
Monday - Friday, August 15-19 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Student must be present for pick up.

School staff will confirm the student is registered at Lincoln Middle prior to the distribution of a chromebook.

We know this is challenging for all Lincoln families, particularly for those with children at campuses in addition to Lincoln, but it is the right decision based on our current situation. We appreciate your patience and understanding. We are committed to ensuring a safe school environment for students and staff and are working to open Lincoln safely.

Sincerely,

Arthur R. Culver, Superintendent

Student Spotlight:
"I’m excited to be working my very first job at the Jackie Joyner Kersee Center, thanks to Better Family Life, and their READY4Life program. Being recognized as a student with a 3.9 GPA who is also a part of the National Honor Society is a great achievement to me. I enjoy working as a JJK summer camp counselor, and having the responsibility of watching, and helping kids. As I move on to college, I’ll major in psychology, hopefully getting a masters degree in the years to come. This job is not only for the present, but determines where my future goes."
