Welcome to PreK! We are getting ready for all our new friends and can't wait! We wanted to send out a reminder about our Orientation scheduled for Wednesday, August 24th at 5:30 at Martin Middle School for both Oldham& Martin locations starting in the cafeteria and continuing into the auditorium for a presentation. We'll provide some background information on the program, and you'll be able to ask any questions you may have. The information is geared towards parents and can get a little lengthy.
The EPPD will also be available to run a BCI check for families who may want to come into volunteer or attend certain events throughout the year. The cost is $5.00 and can be paid by check or cash. Monthly family engagements do not require a BCI check to attend.
The YMCA will also be in attendance to assist families who need before and after care. You can contact them by phone at 1-508-336-7103 or by emailing [email protected]. At This time Oldham is still assessing the need for before and after school care.
We will be out of the building until August 18th, after which we will be happy to assist you in any way. We look forward to meeting you and your child on the 24th!

TINY TOWNIE TIMES TINY TOWNIE TIMES March Newsletter
Beginning on Monday, March 7, 2022 the East Providence School Department will no longer require that masks be worn in school buildings or buses. This decision coincides with the school department mask policy that was passed on September 14, 2021 (EPSD Mask Policy) and the latest CDC guidelines. Students and staff have the option to continue to wear a mask at school and on the bus.
In addition, the RIDOH is recommending that schools no longer conduct contact tracing. As a reminder please continue to monitor your child for symptoms and keep them home when they are sick. We will continue to keep other mitigation factors in place, such as increased cleaning and promoting good hygiene practices.

We love you Mrs.Ramos
James R.D. Oldham School Teacher of the Year 2021
The James R.D. Oldham School Teacher of the Year 2021 is Gail Ramos. Gail is an Early Childhood Special Educator who serves the developmental needs of East Providence children ages 3, 4 and 5. She has been a teacher in the East Providence School District for 32 years and holds a Masters of Arts in Education and Human Development.
There is much good to say of Gail! She is a passionate, dedicated, loyal and kind person. She embodies the true qualities of an exceptional educator. Gail values each of her colleagues, respects all students and communicates in an exemplary manner with parents. Many years after moving on from pre-k, parents will ask about Mrs. Ramos, and request that best of regards be sent to her.
Gail has recently become an author and illustrator of a children’s book. The book, entitled, I Matter is explained by Gail as, “I wrote this book for our youngest children of color as a way to enhance their self-esteem and empower them as they learn and grow.” This truly inspirational book reminds children that they are very important and, “I Matter for so many reasons.”
We, at Oldham School are honored to call Gail a member of our school family. We are proud to recognize her as our Teacher of the Year, 2021.
The James R.D. Oldham School Improvement Team met on Monday evening, March 22, 2021, at 6pm, virtually. In attendance were D. Brodin, L. Andrade, M. Moon, R. Belasco, D. Turbitt, S. Gaudreau, and D. Peluso. The meeting was one hour in length.
Discussed was the progress being made toward accomplishing the 2020-2021 golds set forward in the Oldham School Improvement Plan. In Goal A: Academic Excellence:
At least 81% of children assessed by the Teaching Strategies Gold Program have improved widely held expectations in cognitive development which includes logic and reasoning skills, memory, attention and cognitive flexibility. In Goal B: Social/ Emotional Learning: Students have (under Conscious Discipline strategies) increased utilization of breathing techniques and commitments leading to self-regulation under the guidance of staff who are committed to talk, listen and encourage student expression. In Goal C: Staff have completed professional development opportunities that support district initiatives, school focus activities and best teaching practices. Finally, importantly, in Goal D: School Self-Assessments, surveys, and various school/home communications being used within the school to promote opportunities to involve parents and community members to volunteer, participate in learning of school initiatives, classroom strategies and shared decision-making practices within the school were discussed. School Attendance was also discussed in the context of this COVID period.
A subcommittee of the team decided to create a parent survey to assess the effectiveness of school/parent interactions and communication during this school year. A draft will be reviewed at the next SIT Meeting on April 12, 2021. Data relating to school attendance will also be discussed.
SUPPORT CENTER The EPSD Support Center is designed to provide you with a wide variety of resources to support your health and wellness and that of your students and their families as we navigate the re-opening of our school community during this challenging time.

Oldham Pre-K School
Welcome to the 2021 Year!
Dear Parents and Friends,
The staff and I are very happy to have returned to In-Person Learning! We would like to thank you for all your support while we were at home during this holiday time; it is wonderful to see how much our little friends have grown! May I ask if you have any questions or concerns for us at this time?
This month of January promises to be a quick one. As you know, next Monday, January 18, 2021, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and there will be no school. We hope that this day will be a family day full of happiness and fun – sunshine outdoors, too!
On Monday, January 25, 2021, teachers will be attending professional development workshops so there will be no in-school learning. All children will have a special packet to complete with Mom or Dad, along with a new book to read!
As you know, each month we take a close look at one of the RIELDS Domains. This month we will focus upon Social Studies where we are learning about how our children relate to their family and community. Our story this month talks about being kind to each other. We hope you will enjoy it with your child.

Thank you, Nurse Sue! Importantly, during the first two weeks of February, we are asking that you complete a short survey from the Rhode Island Department of Education. It is called SurveyWorks. If you have an older child, you may be familiar with it since all public school parents complete it each school year. This survey is an effort to gather information that will help improve the quality of schools across Rhode Island. It will help educators understand and act upon what students, teachers, support professionals, administrators and parents say about climate, culture, and learning environments in our school. You will complete it online. We will be sending you a separate link to join and an access code to enter to open the survey online within the next week. We are very appreciative that you take your valuable time in support of this.
Please remember, I remain available to you always at your convenience. Again, Happy New Year!
