South Country School District students seamlessly transitioned back to the classroom on Sept. 2. Among them were the kindergarten class of 2039 and the senior class of 2027.

On their first day of school, eager elementary school students were greeted by their new teachers and prepared for a year of engaging learning activities, while middle and high school students quickly became acquainted with new schedules and teachers.

“This first day of school marks the beginning of an important journey as we begin charting a new course together,” said interim Superintendent of Schools John Dolan. “The possibilities are endless as we remain committed to providing every student with the support, experiences and encouragement they need to succeed.”

Each of South Country School District’s elementary schools recently welcomed incoming kindergartners to special meet-and-greet events designed to make the members of the Class of 2039 feel comfortable and excited about the first day of school. Students had the opportunity to meet their teachers, become familiar with their surroundings and pick up their personalized name tags that they wore on their first day.

Incoming Bellport High School freshmen and their families recently attended a high school orientation to learn more about the school, meet administrators and staff and prepare for the start of the new school year.

As part of the orientation, upperclassmen welcomed the ninth graders and led them on tours of the school. The tours gave freshmen an opportunity to become familiar with the building, locate important areas and get a better sense of what to expect when they officially begin classes.

The freshmen and their families also learned important information about high school life, programs and opportunities while meeting administrators, teachers and staff members. They received their class schedules and had the opportunity to ask questions.

The South Country School District Board of Education has appointed Diana Haanraadts as interim principal of Brookhaven Elementary School.

“We are excited to welcome Diana Haanraadts to our district as the interim Brookhaven Elementary School principal,” said interim Superintendent of Schools John Dolan. “She brings a strong commitment to student success and a genuine passion for building a positive school community. We are confident that she will be an outstanding leader and advocate for our students, staff and families.”

Haanraadts, of East Islip, joins South Country from the Great Neck School District, where she served as the assistant superintendent for elementary education since 2023. In that role, she worked to develop strong relationships with parents, students and teachers through shared decision-making workshops and Parent University sessions. She also served in several administrative roles in the Massapequa School District, including assistant to the superintendent and elementary school principal. She also served as an elementary school assistant principal in Valley Stream District 30. She began her career as an elementary school classroom teacher in the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District.
In addition, Haanraadts has coached soccer in the Herricks School District and at Hofstra University and Dartmouth College.

Haanraadts holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and education from Dartmouth College and a Master of Arts in the teaching of writing and an advanced certificate in education administration.

“It is an honor to become the interim principal at Brookhaven Elementary,” said Haanraadts. “I look forward to working closely with staff, students and families this year to continue to provide a healthy and happy environment for all our children.”

Members of Bellport High School’s Class of 2026 received their diplomas during a momentous summer graduation ceremony held on Aug. 26 in the school’s library.
Bellport High School Principal Erika Della Rosa congratulated the students on their achievements, acknowledged the challenges they had faced and challenged them to go forward and achieve their individual goals. “Step forward into this new journey with confidence because South Country is rooting for you,” she said.
