What is the process of modeling in the classroom?

Modeling is the technique of acting out or illustrating a skill or idea to students before they try it themselves. It is frequently the primary tool used by teachers to instruct learners and can be used to introduce a topic, reinforce an idea, troubleshoot a problem, or review what has been taught.

Effective modeling includes:
- expressing your objectives before you start, including presenting the items and materials to be used.
- working through the item slowly and methodically.
- describing each step, including your thoughts and actions.
- highlighting tricking choices or potential mistakes and how to navigate them.
- demonstrating errors and how to recognize and correct them.
- illustrating how to check and double-check your work.

Modeling many examples may aid younger students. Model the first as a demonstration and the second as a narrated account of what a pupil might do in the second person or "you."

For example: "Now you will add these two numbers together."

Allow the learner to interrupt, ask questions, or make ideas during the second modeling.
