In 1870, five years after emancipation, John Henry Moore and his wife Inez Parsons bought a piece of West Tennessee farmland that their family still owns to this very day. 🌾🏡

The Moores didn't stop at building a farm. They opened a school on their own property to educate Black children in the area at a time when public education for Black families was scarce and unreliable. More than 150 years later, Moore Century Farm remains a working, African American owned farm, one of the longest continuously Black owned farms in the country, and now operates as a living history site where visitors can walk the same land and learn the story of the family who built it from nothing.

Black land ownership in Tennessee peaked in 1910 at 16 million acres before decades of discrimination and forced land loss cut that number down dramatically. What does it mean to you when land manages to stay in a family for generations?

Thank you Tennessee Historical Commission and Graham Perry for sharing your skills and knowledge with us during the Moore Flatwoods Homecoming on September 26, 2026.

We had a successful cemetery workshop this past Saturday at the Moore Chapel Cemetery in Holladay. Former State Representative Steve McDaniel and his wife were present, amongst several others. The workshop was part of the Moore family reunion. Most of the cemetery’s dirty headstones were cleaned, with everyone learning proper cleaning techniques.

BLOOM and GROW. We started late on the Victory Garden, yet beginning to harvest and see sprouting fruit and veggies such as broccoli greens, tomatoes, mint, basil, thyme, rosemary, watermelon, blackberries, grapes, figs.. excited to see them growing….yummy
