For Carl Hildebrand, a second-year M.Div. student, the Hispanic Scholars Program gave him the opportunity both to reflect deeply on theology and to share meals, conversations and lighthearted sports rivalries with classmates.

"The Hispanic Scholars Program reaffirmed my deep love for all of God’s children and strengthened my ethic of care. It helped me practice holding space for both joy and suffering as inseparable parts of the human experience," he said.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are sharing highlights from three Vanderbilt Divinity students who participated in the Hispanic Scholars Program over the summer. For Sophie Esteves Varvella Vicente, a third-year M.Div. candidate, she found that HSP allowed her to see academic spaces as places of cultural recognition, joy and belonging.

Sophie shared that the HSP program paired with her VDS coursework has helped her to understand the history of social movements and why progress can be slow.

"The program has strengthened my conviction that scholarship can be accountable to the people and movements from which it emerges," she said.

In recognition of LGBTQ+ History Month, join us as we hear scholar and VDS alum Lucas Wilson, MTS ’15 discuss his edited volume "Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors' Stories of Conversion Therapy."

This recent publication brings together 17 stories about conversion therapy, written by survivors themselves (including Wilson). We’ll hear Wilson virtually for a brief book talk, and then we’ll engage in conversation together about the themes that emerge.

This is a hybrid event: in-person participants at the Divinity School will receive lunch and a copy of the book. There is limited space for in-person participation. Registration is required for in-person and virtual attendance.

Join Baylor University Professor, Rev. Dr. Tyshawn Gardner, as he discusses his book "I Heard the Preaching of the Elder: The Life, Proclamation, and Protest of Kelly Miller Smith, Sr."

Kelly Miller Smith, Sr. remains one of the most prolific preachers in American history. Yet, his work in and beyond Nashville, signifies that he was much more than a preacher. Smith, Sr.’s ministry in and beyond First Baptist Capitol Hill stands as a model for pastors who serve amidst the most divisive time in America. An organizer, an educator, and a Civil Rights leader, who possessed an unrivaled dedication to his family and the Body of Christ he served, Kelly Miller Smith, Sr. was more than just a preacher.
