Today, we celebrate an incredible group of students who completed an intensive five-day Wilderness First Responder program here at the Katahdin Higher Education Center.

Five full days. Long hours. Hands-on scenarios. Tough decisions. Teamwork. Problem-solving. And the kind of training that prepares you to respond when help may be a long way away.

But this week was about more than earning a certification. It’s about access. Opportunity. And investing in the people who live and work in rural Maine.

Our students came from six counties across the state, traveling to the Katahdin region to take advantage of a high-quality workforce training opportunity that was available to them at no cost through the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce funding.

That is why the Katahdin Higher Education Center matters. We bring education and workforce training to the people and communities who need it most—right here in rural Maine. We create opportunities that might otherwise require traveling hours away, leaving jobs, or putting education on hold.

Programs like this matter. They provide high-value, short-term workforce training that equips people with practical skills they can immediately take into the field—strengthening Maine’s outdoor recreation economy while helping make our rural and remote communities safer.

We don’t just teach skills. We help people build the confidence and credentials to step into new careers, strengthen existing ones, and contribute to the communities they call home.

For Maine’s growing outdoor recreation economy, having trained professionals who know how to respond in remote environments isn’t a luxury it’s a necessity.

So congratulations to our Wilderness First Responder Class!

You came to the Katahdin region to learn. You challenged yourselves. You supported one another. And you’re leaving with skills that could one day make an extraordinary difference for someone else.

🐾 Stella puts the “Woof” in WFR! 🐾

Day three of our Hybrid Wilderness First Responder training is underway at the Katahdin Higher Education Center!

One of the things we love most is welcoming learners from all across Maine to the Katahdin region. They’re taking advantage of high-quality workforce training at no cost to them and getting one of the best classrooms in the state along with it.

Because when your classroom includes the Katahdin region, you don’t need four walls. You just need to step outside.

We’re proud to connect people with high quality training opportunities that build skills, open doors, and strengthen Maine’s workforce—all while showcasing the incredible place we get to call our backyard.

And, of course, Stella is making sure everyone stays on task. 🐶😉

This week we welcome another full cohort of future outdoor professionals for our Wilderness First Responder (WFR) training!

This program was made possible through workforce development funding from the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce and the Maine Community College System, this intensive program has attracted participants from six counties across Maine—all traveling to the Katahdin region to gain the advanced emergency medical and rescue skills needed to work safely in remote environments.

From outdoor recreation and guiding to conservation, education, and public safety, Wilderness First Responder certification is a highly respected three-year credential from WMA that helps strengthen Maine’s growing outdoor workforce.

We’re honored that students are choosing the Katahdin region as the place to learn, connect, and build their skills. Their presence not only supports workforce development but also brings new energy and economic activity to our local communities.

A big thank you to the Harold Alfond Foundation for investing in programs that create opportunities for Maine people while helping position the Katahdin region as a destination for high-quality workforce training.
