To start the course, an algebra background is recommended because of the amount and type of math involved.
You might think of chemistry only in the context of lab tests, food additives or dangerous substances, but the field of
chemistry involves everything around us. Have you ever thought that hearing, seeing, tasting and touching all involve
intricate series of chemical reactions and interactions in your body? So, even if you don't work as a chemist, you're
doing chemistry, or something that involves chemistry, with pretty much everything you do. In everyday life, you do
chemistry when you cook, when you use cleaning detergents to wipe off your counter, when you take medicine or when
you dilute concentrated juice so that the taste isn't as intense.
In this course, students will discover what chemistry is, and how it is used and found all around us. In the scope of its
subject, chemistry occupies an intermediate position between physics and biology. It is sometimes called the central
science because it provides a foundation for understanding both basic and applied scientific disciplines at a fundamental
level. For example, chemistry explains aspects of plant chemistry (botany), the formation of igneous rocks (geology),
how atmospheric ozone is formed and how environmental pollutants are degraded (ecology), the properties of the soil
on the moon (cosmochemistry), how medications work (pharmacology), and how to collect DNA evidence at a crime
scene (forensics).
The importance of the scientific method for solving real-world problems will be explored during the course. The student
will gain knowledge in the following areas: types of matter, atomic structure, chemical periodicity, chemical formula
writing and naming, chemical equations. This course will also stress the important relationship between math and
science while studying measurement, metric system and stoichiometry. In the second semester, students will investigate
chemical bonding, thermochemistry, and acids and bases. Knowledge will be gained in the following areas: organic
chemistry, biochemistry, and nuclear chemistry.
