Summer Vacation Activities for Students:
1. Enroll them for swimming, karate, yoga or dance classes. Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activities every day to keep themselves active and healthy.
2. Engage your kids in reading interesting stories and novels. Spending an hour every day helps to improve their reading skills, helps to gain knowledge, increase vocabulary, etc.
3. Explore the World outside. Have picnic at the park, go to the beach, hiking, etc.
4. Engage your Kids in Arts & Crafts.
5. Engage your kids in writing a daily journal. It helps to improve their writing.
6. Lazy afternoons can be turned interesting by watching movies that your kids may have missed in the theatre.
7. Teach them gardening. It helps improve locomotive skills.
8. Teach them how to cook. Cooking will help them explore their senses and helps them to stay organized.
9. Visit the local library.
10. Play with science. For example Mix baking soda and vinegar, compare rocks, etc.

A retirement message from Ms. E. Valido:
Dear Rowan Students and Family,
As I leave this school to retire, I want to thank the many students who have touched my heart; for being amazing students, putting in the necessary effort, studying, and giving your best while at it.
I must thank all the parents for putting my instructions into practice and making things easier for my students at home.
I have been a teacher for more than 36 years. From the first day I walked through the school’s front doors, a spark lit up in me that has never gone out. I believe in each and every one of our Rowan students. They all are going to achieve great things, and all are going to change the world in some way.
Wishing you all luck for your future journey,
Ms. Elena Valido
Dear Rowan Family / Guardians,
I want to inform you that I will be retiring from the LAUSD this June. I have bittersweet feelings about my decision to leave a job that I love, but after more than 38 years of service to the District, I feel that now is the right time to begin a new chapter in my life.
The district has been a huge part of my life. I was raised in the communities of East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights and attended LAUSD schools from elementary to high school.
During my college years, I worked as a Teacher Assistant and then began my teaching career at Trinity Street ES in South LA. After 13 years at Trinity, I continued my teaching career at several other schools, and then took on other school-based assignments as coordinator, literacy coach, and school administrator.
Now with a heavy heart, I will say my farewells to this community that has been so supportive. I will miss our Rowan students the most. They are the kindest, sweetest, and most giving students I have ever worked with. Your children have given me much joy, and it has been such an honor to be able to support their education and to help guide them.
I will be forever grateful to this school community for your support, your patience, and your flexibility during this time. But most importantly, thank you for your belief and trust in me as your child's principal. In spite of the challenges, we faced in the last two years of the pandemic, you supported our school workers as we implemented all the measures needed to keep our students, staff, and parent community safe.
I will miss my job, and the incredible people I have had the pleasure of working with throughout the years, and I will forever cherish the memories.
Have a safe and fun summer break!

Throughout May, Better Speech and Language Month aims to raise awareness concerning disorders of speech, hearing, voice, and language. Communication disorders can develop at any point during a lifetime.
At LAUSD, a student with a Speech Language Impairment is defined as a pupil who has been "assessed as having a language or speech disorder which makes him or her eligible for special education and related services when he or she demonstrates difficulty understanding or using spoken language to such an extent that it adversely affects his or her educational performance and cannot be corrected without special education and related services" (CEC, Section 56333).
