EVENT REMINDER: Join us on Monday, 17 August as we mark the culmination of the journeys of Dr. Anar Kalzhanova and Dr. Gakku Rakhimova at the Michigan State University College of Education as Bolashak International Scholars—Kazakhstan’s flagship, one-year scholarship program.

Michigan State University was an easy choice for Dr. Anar Kalzhanova, who has spent the last year in East Lansing as a Bolashak International Scholar—Kazakhstan’s flagship, one-year scholarship program.

“When I was deciding [which US university to attend], Dr. Xiaoqing Chen of MSU VIPP and Dr. Samantha Caughlan of OISE at MSU replied quickly to my questions—they were very responsive,” explained Dr. Kalzhanova. MSU also prioritized her learning goals. “I met online with my mentor, Samantha—she asked about my vision for the scholarship, the kinds of classes I wanted to take, and the skills I wanted to focus on.”

Dr. Kalzhanova wanted hands-on experience with quantitative research methods and data analysis. Enter Dr. Jun Fu, an MSU expert in data analysis. Together with Dr. Fu and fellow Bolashak scholar Dr. Gakku Rakhimova, she designed and implemented a quantitative study examining the relationship between cyberbullying and assertiveness among university students in Kazakhstan.

The study was her first practical experience using the full-range of SPSS statistics software functions. “For my dissertation, I primarily used excel. I had to know so many formulas and do everything manually! But now that I have SPSS, I plan to use it for all my work and various articles,” explained Dr. Kalzhanova, who is expected to publish 2-3 articles or conference papers a year as a Senior Lecturer at Shokan Ualikhanov Kokshetau State University.

In July, Emily Biskner, who will be a senior this fall majoring in Secondary English Education at Michigan State University College of Education, returned from a 3-week Education Abroad (EA) program in Ireland. ‘Irish Literature and Culture’, led by faculty Kristin Mahoney, explored Ireland and its contributions to literary and political history.

At Trinity College Dublin, Emily visited one of the most photographed libraries in the world—The Old Library and iconic ‘Long Room’, which features a 7-meter illuminated Earth sculpture. “It was one of the biggest libraries I had ever seen! In a time when few people read physical books, it was wonderful to see how many existed and have lasted this long,” shared Emily.

It also houses the Book of Kells, one of Ireland’s most famous cultural objects—an illuminated Gospel manuscript with ‘intricate, jewel-like pages’ which is ‘the finest surviving example of Insular illuminated manuscript art, a style that flourished across Britain and Ireland in the 7th and 9th centuries.’

Ms. Biskner was able to participate in this incredible summer learning experience thanks to a Global Teachers Scholarship, an endowed scholarship for future teachers from MSU International Studies and Programs.
