"Education abroad brought me valuable, unforgettable experiences that I will carry with me at MSU and in my future career as an English teacher,” shared Katie Youmans, an incoming senior at Michigan State University College of Education who just returned from an MSU summer education abroad program called Learning, Culture, and Technology in Europe (LCTE), led by faculty Dr. Heather Shea.

“Education abroad provides unique opportunities not found in a textbook. I was able to have conversations with Dutch and Belgian pre-service teachers and observe classes.” Ms. Youmans continued, “While visiting a variety of European schools, I gained new perspectives on how education systems can function differently globally, and the ways in which education is universal.”

As part of LCTE, there is a focus on global competency goals. “My goal was to facilitate intercultural communication in our everyday interactions. When communicating with someone who didn’t speak the same language or navigating other misunderstandings, it underscored the importance of approaching new situations with empathy and a genuine desire to understand others.”

Ms. Youmans received an Ian J. Render Memorial Endowed Scholarship, which helped make her participation in this incredible summer learning experience possible.

“Whether crossing busy bike lanes in Amsterdam or seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle for the first time, I couldn’t trade the amazing things I got to do on this program for the world – education abroad was easily one of the best experiences I’ve had at MSU.”

MSU book explores (game)play as literacy practice 06/15/2026

How exciting! Here's what you can expect in the book: "[The book] invites educators to envision children, youth and families in their gaming and play as authors, makers, informed readers, writers and more,” said Vaughn W. M. Watson, an associate professor and lead editor.

It is aimed toward educators across K-12 contexts, as well as teacher educators, graduate students and researchers broadly interested in the book’s topics. “We provide concrete and practical resources and suggestions for teachers and practitioners .... [including] tips for integrating culturally relevant (game)play practices into classrooms, a list of various (game)play activities from diverse communities and a template for creating a platform to share culturally relevant games,” shared Jungmin Kwon.

Another great story about a future teacher of Chinese

Since 2007, the Post-BA World Language Teacher Certification Program (WLTCP) offers a high-quality, cost-effective 2-year pathway to a rewarding career in language education for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in any field and are fluent in Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. You will earn both a teaching certificate AND a Master’s Degree!

The 1st year consists of an internship with a veteran mentor teacher in Michigan school districts. The 2nd year offers a residency placement where you will be a teacher-of-record in a US school district, with Michigan State University College of Education support and coursework. Talk about excellent work experience!

The program starts fall semester (August), but we take applicants year-round so it’s always a good time to apply! (See QR code below or link in comments.)

Office of International Studies in Education (OISE) supports WLTCP as part of its role in advancing global perspectives in teaching, research, and outreach.
