In the mid-1980s the University Licensing Program was established to ensure that these marks and symbols are used properly. The primary roles of the Michigan State University Licensing Programs include the following:

Protect the brand: Michigan State has worked hard to establish a powerful and respected brand identity. We must first protect the brand while at the same time modernize and adapt licensing programs to build for the future. Promote: Our role in University Licensing Programs at MSU is to help our partners sell licensed product by only allowing use by officially licensed vendors on quality products. Profit: Royalties generated by the sale of licensed products directly support students at MSU through scholarships and special programming.
