We’re excited to introduce someone who has been making a big impact behind the scenes here at GEAR UP!

While much of what she does happens behind the scenes, the impact of her contributions is felt throughout our program. We are so grateful to have her as part of the GEAR UP family!

Now, we’d love for you to hear directly from Raimi as she reflects on her experience with GEAR UP.

My name is Raimi Soerries, and I am a Senior studying Public Relations with a Business specialization at Michigan State University.

I started my internship with GEAR UP in May of 2024.

Throughout my time with GEAR UP, I have really appreciated how close everyone works together. Being part of the program gave me a second family while I was away from my own. One of my favorite memories was interviewing students in the program and hearing how thankful they were for GEAR UP. It was powerful to see how much the program had changed them and helped them grow.

I’ve learned a lot from GEAR UP, like creating flyers, writing content and copy, scheduling posts, and networking with other vendors. But what I will carry with me throughout life is the fact that a small thing, like encouraging a student or simply showing that you care, can make a big difference in someone’s confidence and how they see their future.

I have loved every day I’ve been involved with GEAR UP. To someone thinking about joining, I would say don’t hesitate. It’s a chance to make a difference, change students’ lives, and how they see their future.

As I respond to these questions, I reflect on my time with MSU GEAR UP and how it truly has been one of my best college experiences. I am so thankful to be a part of the GEAR UP family, where everyone is so genuine. Interning for this program has changed my life in so many ways, and I’m really grateful to have learned from you and worked alongside you.
