Listening to Water: Ekphrasis & Generative Writing on
Ecologies, Land, and Livelihoods
NOV 14, FRIDAY 3-4PM
MSU BROAD ART MUSEUM

What stories can rivers and lakes tell us? Where do they carry our histories? How has the movement and capture of freshwater been shaped, compromised, and defined by corporate interests and State interventions? How might traditional craft, eco-art, and “artivism” translate the water bodies upon which our lives depend? Imagined in collaboration with the MSU Broad Art Museum’s exhibition Mekong Voices: Transnational River Justice in Mainland Southeast Asia, this event teaches you how to slow down, to look deeper into ecological realities both far and near, and to understand y/our own interconnectedness with waterbodies. We invite writers of any background or interest to participate in slow-looking and generative writing alongside sculptures made from found materials, textile arts, photography, and many other artworks. Together, we will explore the interconnectedness between the Red Cedar River Watershed, the Mother River of Mainland Southeast Asia, and the freshwaters that sustain us yet. Facilitated by Dalina Perdomo Alvarez.
