Learn how to make managing your sources a little easier! đź“šđź’»

Join MSU Libraries online on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for a Zotero workshop. This free workshop will introduce Zotero, an open-source citation management tool, and cover how to download references, format citations and bibliographies in Word and share references with other users.

Registration is required, and attendees should install Zotero and the Zotero browser connector before the workshop.

Join James Madison College and MSU Libraries on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for a discussion with Dr. Gary A. Hoover, Executive Director of Tulane University’s Murphy Institute and professor of economics and law, about his book “Ladder or Lottery: Economic Promises and the Reality of Who Gets Ahead.”

Moderated by MSU Provost Emeritus Thomas Jeitschko, the discussion will explore economic mobility, income inequality and the promises of our social contract.

Join the MSU Libraries at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, where Michigan’s own award-winning Bonnie Jo Campbell will be launching her latest book, "The Spirits," out Oct. 13 from W. W. Norton & Company!

MSU Professor Dawn Burns will join Campbell for conversation about this contemporary retelling of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” which gives us a chilling new take on the heartening holiday classic, set against the backdrop of an isolated Michigan farmhouse. A perfect way to welcome in the spooky season ahead of the forthcoming holidays, this event will also feature opportunities for Q&A and refreshments — as well as a chance to get your book autographed by a best-selling author!

Generously co-sponsored by the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures at Michigan State University, a select number of copies of “The Spirits” will be available for FREE to registrants at the event on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Join us on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 12–1:15 p.m. for the next installment of the Our Daily Work / Our Daily Lives Brown Bag Series, hosted in partnership with the Labor Education Program at MSU School of Human Resources & Labor Relations.

In this session, Marian J. Matyn from the Clarke Historical Library will present “Performing Into a New Reality: Michigan Circus Women.” The presentation will explore the careers and cultural impact of female equestrians and fliers, including how their performances, careers and gender-bending challenged perceptions of women’s roles, athleticism, clothing and behavior in American society.

We had a wonderful time at the MSU Libraries “Writing the Midwest” event earlier this month, where we heard contributors from the recently published books “Lingering Inland” and “On an Inland Sea” talk about what it means to write from a perspective of place. We are especially grateful to Professors Dawn Burns and Tim Conrad for moderating this event, along with our co-sponsors at Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures at Michigan State University, Michigan State University Department of English, and CISAH, and to Lansing Lit for including us in the festival programming! Thank you as well to authors Cal Freeman, Sarah Pazur and Ramya Swayamprakash for coming to MSU Libraries to share on how memory, landscape and belonging shape identity and storytelling across the region, and to our students and community members who came out to learn about the threads that weave us together in writing our region’s tapestry.

Explore some of the more unusual plants growing at Beal Botanical Garden during a tour with the MSU Herbarium. Discover the unique characteristics of these species and learn how people have studied and used them throughout history.
