SUPPORT SOMALI WRITERS!!! This event will take place at the East Lansing Public Library from 6:30pm-8:30pm!

FARTUMO KUSOW will present a short talk providing the historical context for Tale of a Boon's Wife - Somalia from 1976 until 2003, a period marked by severe political change. The presentation will illustrate the way in which the tribal system works as a foundation for all social functions in Somalia and how certain tribes are considered unworthy of any type of contact or relationships by other tribes. The issue of otherness and how the term is defined depending on the point of view of the person defending it will be explored, and how we in North America are grappling with the same issues of exclusion, class, prejudice, and the question of who can be part of a nation.
