Join us in welcoming Dr. Benjamin Tracy as the next chairperson of the Department of Horticulture. Tracy joins to us from Virginia Tech, where he served as interim director of the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences. He background in education, research, and extension focuses on crop production, agroecology, forage crop ecology, and improving grassland productivity. Tracy succeeds Vance Baird, who served as our department chair since 2009.

Our undergrads are currently completing professional internships throughout the country. Over the next several weeks, each student will share a little about their internship experience.

I'm Steve and this summer I'm interning with Dr. David Douches at MSU in his potato breeding program. I have been extracting potato seed, preparing seed potatoes, and planting them at two farm locations. I am also helping with a grad student's dormancy project, and actual plant breeding.

Our undergrads are currently completing professional internships throughout the country. Over the next several weeks, each student will share a little about their internship experience.

I’m Shua, and this semester I'm interning in Ann Arbor, MI, working in the conservatory and several greenhouses full of both research plants and conservatory stock plants. Duties involve watering, assisting with pruning, planting annuals, and sweeping and weeding. We also help with other horticulture divisions, when we get caught up on conservatory upkeep.

Photo 1: This is my supervisor pruning excess branches off of a Banyan tree in order to introduce more light from the canopy. We planted coleus in this area later.

Photo 2: This is a pot of Lithops (living stones). This is grown in the desert house in the conservatory, and there are spares in the collections in greenhouse 1.

Our undergrads are currently completing professional internships throughout the country. Over the next several weeks, each student will share a little about their internship experience.

Hi I'm Paige and I'm interning in Tipton Michigan. I am mostly working in the conservatory, but will also be helping out all around the gardens. I chose Hidden Lake Gardens because it is local to where I live and is truly a beautiful place to be. It is somewhere I visited as a kid and loved. I also chose Hidden Lake Gardens because I thought it would be a good place to get a variety of experiences such as watering, repotting, and general maintenance of the gardens.

I personally love visiting the conservatory and seeing plants I can't see growing outside in Michigan. My favorite biome in the conservatory is the tropical biome. I love seeing the alocasia and huge monstera with fruit. The wildlife is also fun to see including birds, chipmunks, and even frogs.

Photo 2: One of my favorite bonsais in the collection. However, I can't wait for the wisteria tree to bloom.
