Engineering is demanding. Big Ten athletics are demanding.

These Spartan Engineers are excelling at both.

Twelve Michigan State University College of Engineering student-athletes earned Spring 2026 Academic All-Big Ten honors, representing baseball, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, and men’s and women’s track and field.

Congratulations to these students for their commitment in competition, in the classroom and across MSU Engineering.

Autonomous vehicles need to do more than drive on clear, sunny days.

In Michigan, they also need to understand rain, snow, fog, blowing leaves and changing light.

Hayder Radha, MSU Research Foundation Distinguished Professor in electrical and computer engineering, led a team that collected more than 100,000 frames of camera, lidar and radar data across four seasons in East Lansing.

The goal: help autonomous vehicles better detect pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles and obstacles when visibility drops.

A concrete canoe sounds impossible until Spartan Engineers make it float.

For generations, MSU civil engineering students have taken on one of the field’s most unusual hands-on challenges: designing, building, defending and racing a canoe made of concrete.

MSU’s Concrete Canoe legacy includes hosting the first ASCE-sponsored National Concrete Canoe Competition in 1988 and winning the national championship in 1990 with “Rowing Stone.”

Today, a new generation of students is rebuilding that tradition. Led in part by civil engineering senior Grace Korkmaz, the current team is learning from MSU’s past while preparing for the 2027 competition cycle — refining mix designs, rethinking construction and carrying forward one of Spartan Engineering’s most memorable student traditions.

What happens inside the brain in the split second after a blast or hard hit?

Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Michigan State University, is studying how traumatic brain injuries can form in ways that are difficult to detect immediately.

His team uses ultra-high-speed cameras, soft brain-like models and 3D-printed skulls to observe how controlled impacts affect pressure and strain inside the brain. The research could help guide better helmet designs, smarter rules for blast and impact exposure, and improved protocols for identifying hidden injuries.

Spartan Engineering students are helping design a better campus.

In an Infrastructure Planning and Facilities story, IPF highlights several Spring 2026 Design Day projects that connected student innovation with real campus needs, including accessible signage, pedestrian safety, vermicomposting operations and prosthetic prototypes made from repurposed bicycle parts.

The projects reflect how Design Day brings together students, faculty and campus partners to develop practical solutions that support accessibility, sustainability and safety at Michigan State University.
