Please join us in also welcoming MAJ Joseph Hegtvedt as the Executive Officer of the Spartan Batallion!
MAJ Hegtvedt brings a wealth of leadership and operational experience to Michigan State Army ROTC, with service spanning engineer units, command positions, planning roles, and military instruction. He also deployed to Jordan in support of Operation Spartan Shield in 2019.
We are excited to have MAJ Hegtvedt join our cadre and look forward to the knowledge, mentorship, and leadership he will bring to our cadets.

Benjamin “Ben” Barnard as the 46th Professor of Military Science for the Spartan Battalion!
LTC Barnard assumed his duties in July 2026, bringing years of leadership experience from assignments across the 82nd Airborne Division, 101st
Airborne Division (Air Assault), and the Joint Staff. An Infantry
Officer with multiple operational deployments and an extensive military education, he is committed to developing the next generation of Army leaders.
We are excited to have LTC
Barnard leading the Spartan Battalion and look forward to the year ahead.
