Congratulations to December’s Student of the Month, Paige Mellema!

Paige is a member of the Class of 2025 who goes above and beyond what is expected of her. She serves as the class curriculum representative, and is an advocate for student voices through this position. This past semester she took on extra responsibility within the cardiovascular course and her efforts did not go unnoticed. In addition to her extracurricular involvement, she assists in the East Lansing prosection lab as a bluecoat to other students. And Paige is more than an outstanding student leader: she is also a kind and caring friend who looks out for the best interests of others. She exemplifies a balanced lifestyle of a medical student. We are lucky to have you here at MSUCOM, thank you for all that you contribute to the Class of 2025 and our COMmunity!

Congratulations to November’s Student of the Month, Rebekah Weeks!

Medical school is a challenging time for many, and classmates who are willing to go the extra mile and support one another in both academics and extracurricular activities are instrumental to our COMmunity. Rebekah is a current second year student leader who has filled these shoes and taken extra steps to support her classmates and greater community. Over this past year she served as the President of MSUCOM’s chapter of American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) and led several initiatives for students to learn more about family medicine, in addition to serving on the executive board for LGBT & Allies. This past summer she also went above and beyond as a blue coat in the anatomy lab helping first year students, devoting extra time to prepare and help students in the lab. Thank you for being a compassionate classmate to all and for the positivity and encouragement you spread throughout Fee Hall. We are grateful to have you as part of our COMmunity here at MSUCOM!

We would like to wish everyone who participated in our D.O. Monster Dash 5K this year a big thank you! With your help we were able to raise money for St. Baldrick's Foundation and MSUCOM's initiative Together for Ukraine, all the while having a great morning supporting one another. An extra thank you to those who volunteered and donated, and also to those who dressed up for their walk/run -- we look forward to seeing everyone out on the course again next year!

Did you know that according to a 2019 study, nearly 2/3 of low-income women in large U.S cities reported not being able to afford menstrual hygiene products?

Our SOMA First Year Liaisons, Sabrina, Maria, Esha, and Yasmin, are currently leading a Feminine Hygiene Drive through this upcoming Friday, 11/4 to help address Period Poverty in temporary housing centers. We are collecting donations of pads, tampons, body wash, and deodorant at drop box locations at each site. Monetary donations will also be accepted through Venmo -SOMA. Donations will benefit the City Rescue Mission of Lansing women’s shelter. Thank you to everyone for your support in this initiative!

Congratulations to October’s Student of the Month, Syed Hussain!

The beginning of medical school can be overwhelming for some students as one adapts to a new routine and new workload. With Syed’s efforts, this change was eased for his fellow classmates in the Class of 2026. From the beginning of semester one, he has shared supplemental study resources to support his classmates while providing extra motivation and accountability. When he is not going the extra mile to support his peers inside the classroom, he is continuing to show up for them outside of the classroom, reaching out to check on others’ wellbeing as a compassionate friend. He has been instrumental to the Class of 2026 in building their COMmunity, especially at the MUC campus. Syed, thank you for exemplifying what it means to be an MSUCOM student, leader, and friend all around!

Congratulations to September’s Student of the Month, Bruin Armwald!

Bruin is known among his peers as an exceptional member of our MSUCOM community. His radiant personality brings a smile to all when they see him around campus, and he will most likely also offer a few words of encouragement or a compliment to brighten your day. He ensures that his peers feel seen and valued through his attentive listening, and this is further mirrored through his actions in leading wellness initiatives, including weekly walks with SAAO. When he is taking a study break, you can often find him on the volleyball court where he is the uplifting teammate that everyone wants to have on their team. Bruin, thank you for your hard work and dedication inside and outside of the classroom. Your energy and all that you bring to MSUCOM is greatly appreciated!
