Cyclospora, the foodborne parasite that can cause the illness cyclosporiasis, has been in the news recently due to outbreaks in states across the US, especially in Michigan. With these outbreaks, questions can arise about where it can thrive, how it's detected and what the best treatment methods might be.

Calling all MSU faculty interested in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)!

MSU's Center for Global Learning and Innovation, the Alliance for African Partnership (AAP), the African Studies Center (ASC), and the Tanzania Partnership Program (TPP) are seeking faculty to join the next cohort of their Africa COIL Faculty Fellows Program. This is a great opportunity for faculty looking to expand their course offerings to fit into a COIL environment. No previous COIL project experience is necessary and the program is open to all academic disciplines.

Positive news in global health!

Per the New York Times, the U.S. Department of State has reaffirmed financial commitments to organizations working to combat malnutrition, improve child health, strengthen outbreak preparedness, respond to humanitarian crises and fight infectious diseases worldwide.

These commitments include support for the World Food Programme, UNICEF, Operation End Starvation, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Ebola response efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, along with the Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations.

These commitments demonstrate how international collaboration translates into real-world impact by sustaining programs that combat infectious diseases and food insecurity and improve the health of communities around the world.

Throughout July, leading researchers and faculty from Universidad César Vallejo in Trujillo, Peru, participated in an inaugural research and faculty leadership development workshop on campus led by the Global Health Institute. MSU faculty from multiple departments met with the UCV delegation to share knowledge, administer training and coordinate potential joint research opportunities between our universities over three weeks.

The UCV delegation was honored to meet with MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz, Provost Laura Lee McIntyre, and College of Osteopathic Medicine Dean Joyce deJong.

We are thrilled with the success of this program and are looking forward to more opportunities for direct collaboration with UCV. A special thank you to GHI's Dr. Qing Xia for organizing this extensive program.

Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine students are gearing up for our August clinical immersion program in Peru by preparing supplies for the communities they will serve.

Through their fundraising efforts, participating medical students have collected and are organizing medical supplies for patients in Iquitos, Trujillo and Lima.
