Mulch, Bugs & New Buds at Tender Heart!

Our Leaf & Learner crew returned to Tender Heart Gardens today for a little mulch, a little weeding, and a whole lot of “Wait, come look at this bug!”

The SSC 199 Leaf & Learn crew got their hands dirty and made some wonderful new friends among the bugs and other little inhabitants who call Tender Heart home. Turns out the garden has quite the welcoming committee.

We also welcomed Dr. Kara Haas from MSU’s Kellogg Biological Station and Department of Plant Biology for a morning of immersion and engagement. We loved having her learn alongside us!

A big thank you to Morgan Doherty for welcoming our crew back this week, sharing this space with us, and giving our students another chance to learn with their hands in the dirt.

Anthropology majors at the mic! 🎤

This past Monday, Cori and Lauren, our Summer 2026 Bath School Museum interns, presented their summer-long internship work at the Bath Township monthly meeting for September.

Students do meaningful work at their internship sites, and they deserve space to share it with others. What a special opportunity for Cori and Lauren to tell Bath community members and local government officials about the fantastic work they’ve done and why it matters.

We’re so proud of these two for the care and professionalism they brought to the museum all summer and for stepping up to the mic to share it with others. Give Cori and Lauren some love! 👏💚 👊

🌿 **We came. We learned. We served. We left smelling like fresh herbs.** 🌿

This week, our SSC 199 Leaf & Learn crew traded the traditional classroom for a literal living one during a service and workshop day at Tender Heart Gardens on Lansing’s Eastside.

Tender Heart Gardens is a vibrant, q***r and trans community-centered growing space where plants, people, knowledge, and neighborhood connections are all beautifully cultivated . It is EXACTLY our kind of classroom. 💚

Our Leaf and Learners rolled up their sleeves, got their hands dirty, asked thoughtful questions, laughed—a lot—and experienced what community-rooted learning looks like in action.

A HUGE, HUGE, HUGE Leaf & Learn thank-you to our gracious host and guide, Morgan Doherty! Morgan’s infectious passion, quick humor, boundless enthusiasm and energy, kindness, and generous spirit made the day meaningful, memorable, and just plain fun.

And because Morgan believes no student should ever leave a garden empty-handed, our crew headed home with an abundance of fresh herbs and even more smiles. 🌱😁 I cannot confirm how many students immediately started planning dinner—but basil was definitely giving them possibilities.

This is what SSC 199: Leaf & Learn is all about: service with purpose, learning through experience, building genuine community connections, and occasionally going home with enough herbs to open a very small farmers market.

Thank you, Morgan and Tender Heart Gardens, for helping my students grow in every sense of the word! 🌿💚
