It has been a busy couple of weeks in STEM!

Fifth graders used coding to program a chip to be able to test soil moisture, and are now developing irrigation systems.

Fourth grade has been doing all things weather, and ended with an awesome lesson from Mr. Bak, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Third graders have been making cars to race on magnetic levitation tracks, and testing how adding weight can change speed.

A huge thank you to Mr. Beltz from Char-Em Street STEM for coming in and working with third and fourth graders.

Another huge thank you to Mr. Bak from the National Weather Service for coming in and discussing weather with fourth grade!

Thanks to the Charlevoix County Community Foundation and Raven Hill Discovery Center, third graders had an opportunity to learn all about magnets!

Students learned about magnetization and how magnets are used in everyday objects and in the workforce.

This week in STEM, second graders learned about non-Newtonian fluids. Non-Newtonian fluids are fluids that change thickness or viscosity when force is applied.

Second graders made ‘oobleck’ to explore a non-Newtonian fluid. Oobleck is a solid when force is applied to it, but becomes a liquid when there is no force applied.

Sometimes learning can be messy!

Make Oobleck at home:

2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water.

It was an exciting week in STEM last week! Fourth graders put their ideas into reality making a mini golf course that included coding Hummingbird Bits. Fifth graders got to test the mini golf course by coding Sphero minis to navigate the course! Third grade coded Dash robots to follow a line they created, using measurements along with trial and error.

Ms. Skop’s fourth grade class is hard at work designing a mini golf course for fifth graders to try out!

As part of their learning experience, students have been developing their coding skills using Hummingbird Bits, which will allow them to incorporate movement and lighting features into their mini golf course.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a playful alphabet book where letters race up a coconut tree, only for the tree to get too crowded and send them tumbling down.

Today in STEM, kindergarten students practiced perseverance as they tried to see how many letters they could stack on their coconut tree before it came tumbling down!! Their problem solving skills were activated when they realized there was more than one way to solve this challenge!

“Science is SO COOL!” -Second Grader

Observations can be used to gather data and answer questions. Today in STEM, second graders used their senses to observe what happens to a solid Skittle when it interacts with a liquid. None of the students guessed that the “S” would float off the Skittle!
