Eighth Grader Paige Mathers Wins Rydzeski Scholarship

East Islip Middle School eighth grader Paige Mathers was recently awarded the prestigious SCMEA Burnhardt J. Rydzeski Scholarship, given to very serious, talented, dedicated and hardworking students. Mathers plans to use the $500 scholarship for private study.

Mathers plays flute in the EIMS Concert Band and participates in gymnastics, but her true love is singing and musical theater. She has been attending NYSSMA for voice since the second grade, always receiving the highest rating possible, and travels to Manhattan daily for rehearsals. Mathers has performed in a variety of musical productions at the Broadhollow Theatre Company, CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale, John W. Engeman Theatre in Northport, Smithtown Performing Arts Center and Studio Theatre of Long Island in Lindenhurst. She has trained acting, dance and voice at the Argyle Academy of the Arts in Babylon, where she received Best Soloist and Best Overall Performer awards.

“Paige is an amazing student and so deserving of this scholarship,” said teacher Concetta Stevens, who nominated Mathers for the honor. “Even with her vigorous and demanding schedule, Paige always gives 100% with a smile and grace while maintaining excellent school grades.”

I had the honor of attending the Breakfast of Champions this morning at the Middle School. Congratulations to all the honorees and their parents. Thank you Mr. Seifert, Dr. D'Aversa and the school staff for running the program this morning.

Have a great First Day of school

This morning I attended the 9th grade orientation at the High School. Mr. Bernard and his staff including class advisors and guidance counselors did an excellent job in their presentations. As a community we need to support these new High School students. As a Board member I will do everything in my power to make sure that they have a great High school experience and provide them with the tools to succeed. Please keep these young students in your thoughts these coming weeks since it is a tough transition.God Bless.

To all of my Facebook followers. There is a Blood Drive at St. Mary in East Islip this Tuesday the 30th. I cannot donate because I am on blood thinners but I would if I could. Our area has a severe shortage of blood.If you can donate that would be great. God Bless.

School is almost starting and I want to ask you a favor... sit down with your children for 5 minutes and explain them that being very tall, short, chubby, skinny, black or white is not a joke.

That there is nothing wrong with wearing the same shoes every day. Explain to them that a used backpack carries the same dreams as a new brand backpack. Please teach them not to exclude anyone for "being different" or not having the same possibilities as the rest. Explain to them that teasing hurts... and that they go to school to LEARN, NOT to compete. You and I are worth the same!

Education begins at home and I add to it;
SHOW THEM THAT GOD LOVES THEM AS THEY ARE!! That we ALL are SPECIAL to Him! And that each one is worth a lot to God ❤️
