The Kid Knows

A parent settles into the armchair with their coffee, glances over at the kid watching Wrestling Smackdown, and decides this is the moment to deliver a lesson about reality. “You know... you’re watching something totally made up and fake.” The kid on the rug barely blinks before firing back: “Yeah, sorta like you watching CNN and MSNBC.” The chair suddenly feels a lot less authoritative.

This is the oldest dynamic in Roman political life: the elder citizen who consumed the official narrative of the Forum, the Senate speeches, the curated triumphs paraded through the streets, then turned to the younger generation and accused them of chasing spectacle. Roman satirists like Juvenal had a word for it. He called it bread and circuses, panem et circenses, the deliberate feeding of the populace with entertainment and managed information to keep them docile and obedient. The patrician class consumed their own version of the circus, they just dressed it in togas and called it civic discourse.

What is remarkable is that the Greeks understood this too. Plato warned in the Republic that a democracy feeding itself on flattering information, on narratives designed to comfort rather than illuminate, was essentially a population watching shadows on a cave wall and insisting the shadows were real. The child in this cartoon is, functionally, pointing at the cave wall.

The prank is that every generation believes their media consumption is the serious one, the real one, while the next generation’s entertainment is the distraction. The Romans believed it. The Athenians believed it. And here we are, still in the armchair, still holding the mug, getting fact-checked by a kid on a rug.
