Ross School

Our second graders headed out to the wetlands of North Haven with the , exploring the saltwater marsh and estuary as part of their ongoing study of the natural world. Through careful observation and investigation, students began building the foundation for next year’s deeper exploration of migratory marine mammals and the bioacoustic environment.

Back at Ross, they transformed their discoveries into works of art, creating water droplet paintings inspired by the molecular structures that allow water to move through plants, and whale tail studies modeled after the identification methods used by researchers.

We're excited to share that their artwork is now on display at the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum as part of the Land and Sea installation, which opened on June 20. Be sure to stop by and see their work!

The Spiral Garden is in full bloom! 🌸🍓

This spring, students rolled up their sleeves and got to work planting and caring for strawberries and flowers in the Spiral Garden. Through hands-on learning, they explored the connections between science, sustainability, and stewardship while helping the garden grow.

These small seedlings have grown into something special, thanks to the care and attention of our students!

Ross senior Gabe K. recently published an article in the East End Beacon on his senior project, Cast Off Cuisine, Cast Off Cuisine, which explores how we can reduce pressure on natural resources and create affordable ways to eat well by making small changes in the kitchen. From composting to cooking with overlooked local seafood, Gabe shares strategies to help make our food system more sustainable. 🌱

Congratulations to Chengyue Evan P. ’27 on an incredible achievement at the 2026 New York Alliance Film Festival!

Evan earned the Gold Medal in Experimental Filmmaking for "Somnolent Insomnia," a visually stunning film developed in part through Ross School’s "Cinematography and Editing" elective.

Evan's film draws upon a rich history of European and Asian arthouse filmmaking, including Andrei Tarkovsky and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Recognized among hundreds of submissions from students attending independent and private schools across New York, his award-winning work showcases exceptional cinematography, editing, and artistic vision.

We are thrilled to celebrate Evan’s success and this remarkable milestone in his filmmaking journey!

🐝 In one of their final units of the year, Grade 1 students explored the fascinating world of bees, learning about bee anatomy, communication, the different roles bees have within a hive, and their importance to our ecosystem. As a culminating activity, they proudly presented their play "Into the Hive," sharing all they have learned about life inside the hive and the vital work bees do every day. Bravo to our young scientists and performers! 💛🖤

More than a dozen Ross School students joined 60+ readers from across the community for Canio’s Great Gatsby Marathon!

Inspired by Ross English teacher Paul Gansky, our students delivered outstanding readings alongside acclaimed actors, writers, and literary enthusiasts, including actors Paul Hecht and Matthew Conlon, and Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan. We’re proud of our students for sharing their voices with the community and look forward to future read-aloud events!

Bravo to the Ross School cast of "Once Upon a Mattress" for their performance of “Shy” at the Teeny Awards at Westhampton Beach High School on June 14!

Congratulations to Sophie R. ’29, Jake K. ’28, Zev G. '26, and Fairleigh S. ‘26 for earning their Carnegie Mellon SMART Robotics Technician certifications from Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy.

Each student dedicated over 200 hours of rigorous, hands-on coursework spanning software, fabrication, electrical systems, and mechanical engineering. Along the way, they successfully earned five micro-certificates that reflected their competencies across each area of robotics and engineering. We are so proud of their dedication and hard work! 🤖🔧
