2.1.26 We are half way between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

It seemed fitting to me that this weekend marks the beginning of the 2026 growing season for the Grow Wise Learning Greenhouse! Each seed I have sown has felt like both a healing and a promise.

As I planted the seeds that Emma Witkovsky harvested for me, from the most majestic Butterfly Milkweed I have EVER seen growing in her garden, I felt a deep connection to both the past and to the future.

The magic of growing gardens and learning from the lessons they teach will never be lost on me.

I am excited to see what germinates ~ embracing the return of the light ~ and ready to grow forward this year.

I wish the very same for you. ☀️ 🌱 ✨

I want to share this incredible story from Growing Gardens in Portland, OR. They built a series of greenhouses spread throughout the city as part of their vision to support garden/ farming education, seed sovereignty, and access to food. I also happen to be incredibly proud because that is my brother Matt - tending one of the greenhouses and working every day to teach kids where their food comes from! Tucked in the Michigan Oaks neighborhood on the east side of Grand Rapids grows one of the most magnificent urban prairie creations you will find. Today I got to participate in their first BioBlitz on the beautiful grounds of the Dominican Sisters Grand Rapids in their Marywood Prairie. A BioBlitz is a community science event where volunteers and educators work to identify as many species as possible during their time together.

It was oppressively hot and humid, but that could not contain the enthusiasm of all the volunteers intent on exploring the incredible biodiversity of this land that has been tended so thoughtfully. Rebecca - Revery and Lea - Joyful Wildcrafting curated the event and encouraged us as we worked. Every detail of the day was exceptionally educational and also a reminder that our world is wild and wonderful and full of so many intricacies that will never cease to inspire and amaze!

6.30.25 “Sometimes I need only to stand wherever I am to be blessed.” ~ Mary Oliver

I was reminded of this line while standing in the field at Golden Hour Herb Farm yesterday during a beautiful half-day retreat that was designed to encourage connections to plant wisdom. It felt good to slow down, pay attention, listen to the wind in the cottonwood leaves, watch the monarchs enjoy the thriving milkweed, smell the clary sage in the hot summer sun, admire the blooming poppies, bathe in the sounds of singing bowls, and feast on the most amazing garlic scape pesto!

My work is centered around encouraging others to spend time outdoors. Yet it had been too long since I spent an afternoon just breathing and listening to the natural world. I left feeling grounded and grateful for the healing power of time spent outdoors and reminded that nature speaks to us if we listen.

The last image is of the beautiful print I have in my office. It is “Still” by the amazing artist Nikki McClure - https://www.nikkimcclure.com/ and you can purchase it through Buy Olympia - https://buyolympia.com/

“It was Early” by Mary Oliver

It was early,
which has always been my hour
to begin looking
at the world

and of course,
even in the darkness,
to begin
listening into it,
especially
under the pines
where the owl lives
and sometimes calls out

as I walk by,
as he did
on this morning.
So many gifts!

What do they mean?
In the marshes
where the pink light
was just arriving

the mink
with his bristle tail
was stalking
the soft-eared mice,

and in the pines
the cones were heavy,
each one
ordained to open.

Sometimes I need
only to stand
wherever I am
to be blessed.

Little mink, let me watch you.
Little mice, run and run.
Dear pine cone, let me hold you
as you open.

6.23.25 Summer just arrived and I have not even planted the tomatoes that my father helped me sow over two months ago. I am watching annuals go to seed in the pots and soil blocks they were started in. I am staring at empty trays waiting for perennials sown in winter to fill them. I see my trellises overtaken by plants that have not been harvested and garden rows filling with unwanted weeds in place of the tomatoes. {the milkweed is welcome of course!}

This has probably been the hardest start to a growing season in my entire life. Due to layers of circumstances out of my control I find that I am unable to tend and care for so many of the plants and projects that I have begun in the last few months. Yet I am grateful have been able to care for my family these last few weeks with the same attention and care I would have given to my growing garden.

I remembered that it is actually good practice to let the fields lie fallow. Years of only growth and harvest deplete the earth where our roots are anchored. When wildness returns to the land it has the opportunity to nourish and replenish itself. Among the untended spaces I also see so many precious plants volunteering and blooming like reassuring smiles in the most unexpected of places.

Growth sometimes looks different than you imagined, but nature is resilient, change is the only constant, and earth abides.

It was such a beautiful morning watching the contagious joy of Emma Witkovsky's amazing scholars spread as they shared their wisdom on the importance of stoneflies in our streams with Rep. Stephen Wooden. One step closer to passing H.B. 5563 making the stonefly our state insect!

Wow! Made it to the Children & Nature Network conference today and I am really looking forward to learning from the incredible array of people and community partners that also want to encourage outdoor and environmental learning for all! Honored to be able to share some of my work with Grand Rapids Public Schools and celebrate our amazing teachers and scholars ~ and all of our community partners in GR ~ on Thursday!

3.25.2025 I hold this quote dear. It is a reminder for me that we hold our own power. We have the strength to endure, persist, survive, and even thrive ~ no matter the circumstances.

This morning I brought in the trays of seeds that I started on the longest night of winter - the solstice in December. Now they are sprouting! Finding their strength in the rains of spring and the warmth of the sun. Soon they will rise and flourish.

Just like the seeds, we can store our vital energy, and choose where to plant it in order to do the most good when the time is right; no matter what anyone else says.

There is so much hope in a new growing season ~ I hope you feel it too. 🌱✨
