Did you know? Juneteenth (June 19th) marks the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were finally free… more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation! It's the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

While President Lincoln declared enslaved people free in 1863, the news traveled slowly, especially to remote areas. On June 19th, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and announced that all enslaved people were now free. For formerly enslaved people, this day represented real, tangible freedom. They celebrated it then, and we celebrate it now.

Today, Juneteenth is a time to honor Black freedom, culture, and community. Thanks to activists like Opal Lee, who spent decades advocating for Juneteenth to become a federal holiday, we now recognize this important day nationwide. It's a time to reflect on how far we've come and the work still ahead. Whether through parades, family gatherings, or learning about this important history, Juneteenth reminds us all why freedom and equality matter.

Meals are free to all individuals 18 years of age and under. No registration required. Meals are being served at our Main Library and Pastrick Branch.
