Two Burkies on the podium in Argentina!

Annika Hunt ’25 and current BMA athlete Katie Rowekamp ’28 are off to a strong start with the U.S. Ski Team’s Europa Cup Team at the South American Cup series at Cerro Castor.

Katie took the win in giant slalom and added two top U18 slalom finishes. Annika returned to competition with back-to-back slalom podiums, finishing second and third.

An exciting start to Katie’s first season with the U.S. Ski Team and a strong return for Annika following her recovery from injury.

Another Burke connection on the hill is former BMA coach and current U.S. Ski Team Europa Cup Tech Coach Kyle Darling. Thanks to Kyle for sharing the podium shots!

Ten years of the first week at BMA.

It’s always a whirlwind. Burkies arrive on a Saturday, move into the dorms, and by Sunday morning, they’re up and at ’em for physical testing. Hardcorientation follows close behind, and when we say we’re off to the races, we mean it.

We pulled ten photos from the past ten years of Opening Days, physical testing, Hardcorientations, and a few favorite fall traditions. They bring back a lot of memories as we get ready to welcome the Burkies back to campus next Saturday.

Meet Karina Deifel, one of the newest members of the Burke Mountain Academy academic team.

Karina joins BMA as a German teacher, bringing an interdisciplinary background in German language, literature, and biology. She holds a Ph.D. in German Language and Literature from the University of California, Davis, and an M.Ed. in Biology from the University of Tübingen. She has also completed the Goethe-Institut’s DLL professional development program for German language educators.

At Burke, Karina will develop the German program, teach German, and help create experiential learning opportunities for students in Europe. Her approach encourages students to explore language and culture through communication, curiosity, and personal experience while building confidence and a broader global perspective.

Outside the classroom, Karina enjoys spending time outdoors, practicing yoga, reading, painting, knitting, and taking on DIY projects.

The feeling of back to school is in the air! While we’re not quite there yet, our athletes are returning to snow across Europe, with the U16s kicking off their August camp in Stelvio, Italy.

Sleeping at 9,172 feet and skiing at 13,000 to 14,000 feet means early starts and some unique ways of getting up the mountain. Who’s in for a cat tow in the dark?

Hello, August! The FIS Men are kicking off their camp in Belgium with plenty of fast turns already under their belts, both on firm indoor snow and on the race track. The controlled conditions of the indoor facility make it an ideal setting for building volume, sharpening quick movements, and focusing on precision. Feels good to be back on snow!

Oh, how quickly summer goes! One minute you're packing for glacier camp. The next, you're wondering how it's already the middle of July.

As we head into the second half of summer, we asked a few BMA coaches one simple question:

* What's one thing every ski racer should be doing this summer?

Their answers were all different: from mountain biking and strength training to dreaming about winter, giving back, getting a summer job, and making time for fun! While we never stop being athletes, we are Burkies, so you know we're going to have the best fun along the way.

Meet Emily Bearse, one of the newest members of the Burke Mountain Academy academic team.

Emily joins BMA as a STEM teacher with 15 years of experience teaching science, math, and the humanities at both the middle and high school levels. A graduate of St. Lawrence University with a degree in history and biology, she most recently served as Dean of Students for fifth and sixth grade at Berwick Academy while teaching math, wellness, and physical education.

At Burke, Emily will teach Algebra I, Biology, and Environmental Science while also serving as a member of the residential life community. She was drawn to BMA by the opportunity to work with student-athletes pursuing ambitious goals and to be part of a school that embraces both winter and rigorous learning. In the classroom, she believes in fostering curiosity, encouraging students to take risks, and embracing a philosophy of progress, not perfection.

Outside of school, Emily enjoys skiing, hiking, canoeing, sewing, baking, and traveling in search of great skiing and even better bread. She also loves spending time outdoors with her dog, Nigel, who enthusiastically considers himself a bird dog.

Meet Alex Greene, one of the newest members of the Burke Mountain Academy academic team.

Alex joins BMA as Learning Specialist, bringing more than a decade of experience in education, along with a Bachelor of Science in sociology and anthropology from Saint Michael's College and a Master's in Education from Duquesne University. In addition to supporting students as Learning Specialist, he will teach an elective called Human Geography this year.

Before coming to BMA, Alex worked with students, families, educators, and community partners to create engaging learning experiences rooted in strong relationships and place-based education. He was drawn to BMA by its mission, "To Champion Ski Racers Chasing Greatness", and the opportunity to work with student-athletes who bring determination and resilience to everything they do.

When he's not at school, you'll likely find Alex spending time with his wife, two daughters, and their dog on the family's farm and nature preserve in northern New Hampshire. He also enjoys snowboarding, fishing, hunting, hiking, and has spent a summer traveling through the Himalayas visiting Buddhist monasteries.
