🌿✨ Celebrating the Birthday of Dr. Maria Montessori ✨🌿

Today, August 31st, we celebrate the 156th birthday of Dr. Maria Montessori,a visionary physician, educator, and pioneer whose ideas changed the way the world sees children.
More than a century after she developed her educational philosophy, one thing is strikingly clear:
Montessori is still relevant. Montessori is still needed. Montessori is still preparing children for the future. 🌱
Dr. Montessori understood something profound: children are naturally curious, capable, creative, and eager to learn. When we give them a thoughtfully prepared environment, meaningful choices, independence, and the freedom to explore, with an attentive adult as their guide;we allow their potential to unfold.

And look at the many lives that began with a Montessori education. 🌎
💻 Larry Page & Sergey Brin — Co-founders of Google
📦 Jeff Bezos — Founder of Amazon
🌐 Jimmy Wales — Co-founder of Wikipedia
🎻 Joshua Bell — World-renowned violinist
👩‍🍳 Julia Child — Chef and celebrated author
📚 Gabriel García Márquez — Nobel Prize-winning author
🎮 Will Wright — Creator of The Sims

Across technology, business, music, literature, and the arts, Montessori alumni have gone on to create, innovate, question, imagine, and change the world.
Of course, Montessori does not promise that every child will become a CEO, inventor, artist, or famous leader.
Its greater promise is something much more meaningful:
To help every child discover who they are, what they are capable of, and how they can contribute to the world. ❤️

At Unitarian Montessori School, we are proud to carry forward Dr. Montessori’s vision and to continue creating an environment where children are respected, encouraged, challenged, and trusted.
🌿 Because when we put children first, we are not simply educating children for today,we are helping shape the adults and leaders of tomorrow.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Maria Montessori.
Your vision continues to live in every child who is given the freedom to learn, explore, and grow. 💚

🎶✨ More than music… it’s learning through music! ✨🎶

We are so fortunate to have a music teacher who does so much more than simply engage our children with songs. Ms. Mary Ellen introduces them to the language of music, musical concepts, instruments, rhythm, and the joy of creating music. 🎻🥁🎹
What makes our music program especially meaningful is how beautifully it connects with our Montessori curriculum. Each month, our music lessons complement the themes and concepts being explored in the classroom, creating a continuous flow of knowledge across different areas of learning. 🌱📚🎶
The children aren’t just singing, they’re making connections, building vocabulary, developing concentration, exploring culture, discovering instruments, and deepening their understanding of the world around them.
This is what makes our Specials truly special: every experience connects back to the child and their Montessori journey. 💚💙

If you’ve been in Montessori for long, you’ve probably heard this:

We don’t say “good job.”

But why?

“Good job” is simply our judgment. I think what you did was good. It doesn’t tell the child much about what they actually did.

Instead, we can notice.

“You spent a long time on that painting. I see you used a lot of green.”

“You put your shoes on all by yourself.”

“You hung your coat on that really tall hook.”

“That looked hard, but you kept trying.”

“You mashed the whole banana.”

These words have meaning. They tell the child, I see you. I see your effort. I see what you did.

“Good job” is easy. Taking the time to really notice is so much more meaningful.

💙 Once a UMS child, always part of the UMS family! 💚
There is something truly special about welcoming our alumni back into the classroom! ✨ Last week, one of our graduates returned to share her wonderful talent and give back to the school community that helped nurture her.
At UMS, we encourage our graduates to stay connected, return, share their gifts, and continue to be part of our community. Watching them grow and come back to inspire the next generation is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. 🌱❤️
Our alumni will always have a special place at UMS. 🥰

From garden to table... 🌿🍅🧀
Food preparation is so much more than making a snack,it’s a meaningful Montessori activity that nurtures independence, concentration, coordination, sequencing, and confidence.
This week, our children carefully picked fresh basil leaves, prepared their own basil, tomato, and cheese sandwiches, and then gathered together to enjoy their delicious creations with their friends. Every step, from harvesting to spreading, layering, serving, and sharing, was an opportunity to build practical life skills while fostering an appreciation for fresh, wholesome food and the joy of community.
These everyday moments are where lifelong skills begin.
💙 At Unitarian Montessori School, we believe the most meaningful learning happens when children can grow it, make it, share it, and enjoy it together.
