The "Corn Lady"

The "Corn Lady" Hi, I'm Penney, The Corn Lady. Stop by this page often for updates. I am located on Hwy 70 West across from fair grounds at Eagle Lanes parking lot. Mon. Wed. Fri.

Saturday 9 30ish til 3 00 or when sold out of corn. Hi, I'm Penney & I am The "Original" Corn Lady, named by the people of Eagle River WI years ago. I've been selling fresh WI produce in Eagle River since 1986. This business started when my grandfather, Ed Hass, and my father, James E Hass, started taking sweet corn to Northern Wisconsin about 1972. They went door-to-door in hopes of selling home

grown, fresh picked sweet corn to whoever lived there. If they had not sold all the corn they had for the day, they would also try selling to grocery stores and taverns. Eventually, they started sending me to ring the door bell and ask whoever answered the door if they would like to buy some of our sweet corn. And that was how I started in this business, with alot of rejection. (To this day, I don't want to disappoint anyone, which is why my produce is '100% satisfaction guaranteed'. If you ever have a problem with any product you've purchased from me, please tell me and I'll work with you to make it good. At some point, not sure what year, they started setting up a 'corn stand' in different Northern WI cities and let the people come to them. Around 1986, I started my own produce stand in Eagle River where my Mom & Dad had sold fresh produce for years; located at the gas station across from Ace Hardware. When that station closed, I moved to the Masonic Lodge parking lot behind that gas station and am still selling there today. Last year (2011) I opened a second location in the parking lot of Prime Choice Meat Market & Custom Landscaping just North of Eagle River on Hwy 45. They made a little corn hut for me there and I try to have that location open on Monday, Friday, & Saturday from around 10am until corn is sold out, as long as I have enough sweet corn. Last year was my first year and my sister, Pat, helped me by being at the corn hut on Monday's, Friday's, & Saturday's, and she helped me when I needed her at the Masonic Lodge parking lot also. Some of you may remember meeting her. When I started on my own in 1986, I had one boy and was pregnant with my second child. Josh was born in November, 1986 and now has his own produce business in Crandon WI and on weekends, his wife, Krissa sells in Elcho WI. He has been a big help and I'm so happy he is carrying on with this business. He now has two children of his own, a 5 yr old girl, Alexa, and a 3 yr old boy, Fischer. Many of my dedicated customers pretty much know my story. I had my only daughter, Tara, in 1988, who helped me each summer up until 2010. That's the year she went to Australia to train to be a missionary. She did help me later that season, but in 2011 she was back in Australia and Pat, my sister, helped me the entire summer. Tara is doing great and should be home mid August 2012 for a little vacation before heading to Montana for more Biblical studies. I know how much she is missed by our customers and she misses you all as well. She's very grateful to those of you who have support her work and anxious to see everyone when she's home in August. She hopes she has enough time to do all she wants to do in the short time she'll be home. This year, 2012, was the first time I ever had sweet corn by the end of June, a record. Due to the warm Spring, the sweet corn was planted in March, on sand with irrigation. As always, the first crops of sweet corn are on the small side, but even though they might be small, they are very big in flavor. We strive to have corn by the 4th of July, but that doesn't happen very often. So to have sweet corn, tomatoes, melons, peaches, raspberries and more by the end of June may never happen again. I love bringing our 'picked fresh daily' WI sweet corn to Eagle River and consider all my customers as part of my extended family. I so enjoy hearing from you and seeing you every year. You've seen my family grow and I've seen yours do the same. Time changes all our lives and we've shared good and bad times. Although it's hard work getting up everyday at 3:30am to get the fresh picked corn, once I get to Eagle River, it's all worth it. I'm so appreciative of all my dedicated customers and all my new customers because without you, I would not have my summer business or nearly as many wonderful, loving friends. This page was started to try and keep everyone updated on produce availability, what's new or changing, and when my schedule changes or to answer your questions. I'll try to keep current, but please bear with me as I begin this new this aspect of my business. I hope it will be helpful to you and please 'like' my page and tell others. I hope this helps communicate more info to you and keeps you up-to-date. Suggestions are always welcome.
