NPSD SOAR Charter HS SOAR HS creates passionate and independent lifelong learners through project based learning, community service, and strong personal relationships.

The School of Options and Applied Research (SOAR) Charter High School is a public school that is allowed the freedom to be more innovative while being held accountable for advancing student achievement. Because SOAR Charter High School is a public school, it:
Is open to all children;
Does not charge tuition; and
Does not have special entrance requirements. WHY CHARTER SCHOOLS? All children should

have the opportunity to achieve at a high level, and charter schools are meeting that need:
Charter schools are some of the top-performing schools in the country. Charter schools are closing the achievement gap. They are raising the bar of what’s possible—and what should be expected—in public education. A higher percentage of charter students are accepted into a college or university. HOW DO CHARTER SCHOOLS WORK? Charter schools foster a partnership between parents, teachers, and students. They create an environment in which parents can be more involved, teachers are allowed to innovate, and students are provided the structure they need to learn. Some specific examples of how charter schools are working to improve student achievement include:
Adjusting curriculum to meet student needs. A charter school can break up the day to provide students with more time on the core subjects they need most. Charter school teachers have a say in the curriculum they teach and can change materials to meet students’ needs. Creating a unique school culture. Charter schools build upon the core academic subjects by creating a school culture or adopting a theme. For example, charter schools may focus on Science Technology Engineering or Math (STEM) education, performing arts, college preparation, career readiness, language immersion, or meeting the needs of dyslexic students — just to name a few. Developing next-generation learning models. Charter schools are rethinking the meaning of the word “classroom.” For example, a lot of projects may related to the outdoors and students may spend a lot of time outside.

This summer I had the amazing opportunity to spend a week aboard the EPA research vessel Lake Guardian on Lake Superior as part of the Shipboard Science Immersion Program. I got to work alongside scientists collecting real data, learning about Great Lakes research, and seeing firsthand how much goes into understanding and protecting these incredible waters.

As a science teacher at SOAR HS (and a lifelong Great Lakes girl 😊), this was some of the best professional development I could ask for. I came home with new ideas, new connections, and a lot of excitement about bringing authentic Great Lakes science into my classroom, our school forest, and our field experiences. I can't wait for my students to get their hands on some of the tools and investigations I learned this week and see how the science we're doing here in northern Wisconsin connects to the larger Great Lakes ecosystem.

A huge thank you to the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network and the EPA Great Lakes National Program Office for making this experience possible. It was an unforgettable week, and I'm so excited to bring it back to my students this fall!

Another element starting to take shape at the school forest… Wild Woozy. MANY thanks to the handful of students who hauled the posts out by hand, dug holes, carted and mixed 450 lbs of concrete with nothing more than a shovel, some 5 gallon buckets of water and a whole lot of grit and persistence!

Twelve SOAR HS students attended a symposium for our literature study of "Death of the Author" by Nnedi Okorafor at UW Madison with over 750 other students from both Wisconsin and Minnesota. Kiera and Emma were selected by their peers at SOAR HS to present in the large group session and the remainder presented at poster sessions in the afternoon. The author was present for a discussion and then toured the poster projects as well.

Congratulations to Northland Pines Junior, Eli Repenshek, for qualifying for the National Championships in Loveland, Colorado based on his outstanding performance at state with the Rhinelander/Northland Pines Ski & Snowboard Co-op team!

Eli will compete March 15–18, representing Northland Pines on the national stage. This is an incredible accomplishment, and our entire Eagles community is proud of the hard work and dedication that led to this moment.

We are so excited for Eli and cannot wait to hear about this amazing opportunity for one of our very own. We will be cheering you on all weekend!

The distribution of gently used toys, games, books, and puzzles is happening now! All items are free to help you fill out under the Christmas tree and the students are ready to give you a hand. We know it's cold outside but the warmth here at SOAR HS is radiating!!!

THANKS SO MUCH! We've been collecting gently used toys for the Open Hearts, Open Doors Toy Drive and have received many donations already - thank you all. If you're still cleaning out old closets or the basement, there's still time to donate! We're collecting through Sunday, December 7th at the locations listed on the flyer.
Distribution day will be December 13th at SOAR HS on the Northland Pines School District Eagle River campus - no prior registration necessary. Open from 8am-1pm.
