A huge thank-you to the North & South Twin Lakes Riparian Association for generously funding our newest fleet addition, picked up from Mel’s Trading Post!

One of the earliest signs of fall, bracken ferns are starting to change color from bright green to golden brown along the roadsides. They'll continue to change until they are more of a copper-brown like this plant. This phenological event is typically observed a little later in the month, but our drought conditions may also play a role in the timing.

For National Honey Bee Day, we’re celebrating the tiny powerhouses that keep our ecosystems thriving. Through hands-on exploration in our SOLE (School Outdoor Learning Experiences) for K-12, students get outside and see them in action. From understanding forest biodiversity to learning how small creatures make a massive impact, SOLE inspires the next generation of environmental stewards to protect the habitats bees need to buzz.

That’s a wrap on week four of our Road Scholar: Gems of the Northwoods program! 🌲✨

Outside of navigating a few low water levels on the rivers, the weather was beautiful and the energy was fantastic. We welcomed 14 wonderful participants from 8 different states—with our farthest traveler joining us all the way from Galveston, Texas!

Thank you to everyone who made this week such an incredible Northwoods adventure. 🚣‍♀️🌿

- You likely have been hearing cicadas by now, but the calling peaks in August. Males have special organs called "tymbals" that they inflate and retract (think accordion) to make their signature noise. If a female is interested, she won't call the same way a male does - instead, she flicks her wings, which is more of a rustling sound for the male to hone in on. Note: these cicadas are different from the periodic cicadas that emerge every 7 years or so (those call earlier in the summers that they emerge!).
