A proper draw stroke is one of the biggest factors in overcoming shooting time constraints because it creates speed through efficiency, not by rushing.
In any timed shooting event, the clock starts before the first shot is fired. The draw is the first movement that effects your overall time, and a poor draw can cost valuable fractions of a second before the gun is even on target.

A good draw does several things:

Reduces unnecessary movement.

Creates a consistent first shot: The draw is where your grip is established. A poor grip forces corrections after the gun is presented, adding time and hurting accuracy.

Improves speed under pressure: A trained draw becomes automatic. When the timer goes off, your body executes the process instead of trying to figure it out.

Allows faster follow-up shots: A stable presentation and proper grip help manage recoil, letting you return to the target quicker.

Builds confidence: Knowing your draw is repeatable removes hesitation, which is often where shooters lose time.

The fastest shooters are not simply moving their hands faster—they are eliminating wasted motion. A smooth, repeatable draw stroke is the foundation that allows a shooter to be fast and accurate. Time is usually lost in inefficiency, not in a lack of effort. Master the draw, and the rest of the shooting process becomes faster and more consistent.

These are things that our instructors are constantly working on and pushing to perfect not just for them selfs but for their students as well.

Cory had a blast competing at the Relentless Rifleman NRL match over the weekend. Why does Cory compete? Simple to become a better marksman!

One of the best ways to improve your shooting skills is to step outside of a static training environment and put yourself under pressure. That's exactly what shooting competitions do.

Competition isn't about winning trophies—it's about exposing weaknesses and building confidence.
When the timer goes off, your heart rate increases, your fine motor skills are challenged, and suddenly simple tasks become more difficult. Sound familiar? That's because stress affects performance, whether you're at a competition, in a defensive encounter, or any other high-pressure situation.

Benefits of competing include:

âś… Learning to perform under stress and time constraints

âś… Identifying weaknesses in your shooting, movement, reloads, and decision-making

âś… Building confidence in your equipment and skill set

âś… Improving target transitions, accuracy, and speed

âś… Learning from other shooters and different techniques

âś… Developing a performance mindset instead of just "range shooting"

At NW Fi****ms & Tactics, we believe that training should challenge you. While competitions are not a substitute for defensive fi****ms training, they are an excellent tool for developing gun-handling skills, accuracy, speed, and the ability to perform when the pressure is on.

The goal isn't to be the fastest shooter on the range. The goal is to become more capable than you were yesterday.

If you've never competed before, don't worry about where you place. Show up, be safe, learn something, and push yourself outside your comfort zone. That's where real growth happens.

Every competition is an opportunity to test your skills, expose your limitations, and come back stronger.

Train hard. Stay humble. Keep improving.
