Orton Gillingham Tutoring My name is Kathy Grindeland and I provide tutoring for struggling or emerging readers in my Eagan home. I currently offer twice weekly one hour sessions online.

Orton-Gillingham (OG) is a philosophy for teaching the structure and system of the English language. It is not a curriculum. The Orton-Gillingham Approach has been in use since the early 1930s when Samuel Torrey Orton, a neuropsychiatrist and pathologist, working with Anna Gillingham, an educator and psychologist, combined their areas of expertise to develop a teaching approach that would help str

uggling readers and guide their teachers. The theoretical base came from extensive studies of children with language processing difficulties such as dyslexia. While teaching the code of language, OG techniques are structured, sequential, systematic, multi-sensory and cumulative. The system relies on a strong oral language base. The O-G continuum involves teaching basic sounds, the fundamentals of word formation, rules and generalizations, syllable types and syllable division, advanced word attack and morphology. There is a substantial spelling component. Students learn to read and spell simultaneously, providing reinforcement through all learning pathways or modalities. Reading and spelling are mutually reinforcing. Orton-Gillingham strategies build and strengthen that link.
