Global Health Connections International 06/20/2024

Global Health Connections International will be hosting a 4-day STEM Camp from June 24th thru June 27th for any rising 6th, 7th or 8th grader. The camp is free and will be held at Kestrel Heights School. The camp will begin at 745am and end at 445pm. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. If you are interested, please visit Shepard’s school website or visit https://www.ghcinternational.org/ to apply or please call the school and speak with Ms. Evans or Mr. Archer.

As we approach the last week of school, we wanted to provide you with some important information:

📚 EOG Scores Distribution
- All EOG scores will be distributed to your child by the end of the day on Tuesday, June 4th.
- Any student who did not pass will receive a letter identifying the test they need to retake.
- The Take 2 session begins with our remediation day on June 10th.
- Retest days are Tuesday, June 11th, Wednesday, June 12th, and Thursday, June 13th.
- Please ensure your child is present during the retest days.
- More information regarding EOG retests will be provided this week.

🎉 Shepard Fest
- Our end-of-the-year celebration is on Tuesday, June 4th.
- If you would like to donate chips or drinks, please drop them off at the front office.

🎓 Eighth Grade Graduation
- Wednesday, June 5th at 10:00 AM.
- Doors will open at 9:30 AM.
- Students will receive their tickets, caps, and gowns tomorrow.
- You must have a ticket to attend this event.

We are excited to announce that the Shepard Middle School Athletic Awards Banquet is scheduled for Thursday, May 30th!

🏅 Event Details:

Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served at 5:30 PM

The awards ceremony will take place in the auditorium at 6:15 PM

Each athlete will receive two tickets for guests

Athletes are expected to wear their Sunday best. For any questions, please email Ms. Reid or Mr. Gupton.

We look forward to celebrating the hard work and achievements of our talented athletes!

📣 Attention Shepard Middle School Parents and Guardians 📣

We've got some important dates coming up! From Friday, May 24th through Thursday, May 30th, our Scholars will be taking their EOG State Tests. Here's the schedule:

📚 May 24th: 8th Grade Reading
🧮 May 29th: 8th Grade Math, 6th & 7th Grade Reading
🔬 May 30th: 8th Grade Science, 6th & 7th Grade Math

Testing kicks off sharp at 9:15am and is expected to conclude around 12:30pm. To ensure everything runs smoothly, please have your students here before 8:30am. Let's make sure they're settled and ready to go!

Please make sure your scholar eats breakfast at home or has time to get breakfast from the school cafeteria.

Next week, from May 6th to May 10th, we're celebrating our incredible teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week! 🎉 Our teachers have truly gone above and beyond this year, and it's time to show them just how much we value their hard work and dedication to our students.

Here's how we can make their week extra special:

🎁 Monday, May 6th: Gift Card Day! Bring your teacher a gift card.

🍰 Tuesday, May 7th: Sweet Treat Day! Bring your teacher a sweet treat.

💐 Wednesday, May 8th: Flower Day! Brighten your teacher's day with a lovely flower or plant.

🥤 Thursday, May 9th: "Drop Off a Drink" Day! Provide your teacher with their favorite drink to keep them refreshed.

🧦 Friday, May 10th: "Sock It to 'Em" Day! Shower your teacher with goodies and a fun pair of novelty socks!

Let's also remember to extend our gratitude to our amazing front office crew, encore teachers, counselors, library staff, assistant principals, and of course, our outstanding servant leader Mr. Claude Archer!

But wait, there's more! 😊 We're also seeking donations to make this week truly unforgettable. If you're able to contribute, we're in need of bottled water, canned sodas, individually wrapped cookies, snack cakes, chips, and candies. Dr. Williams will be stationed out front with a cart during carpool, or you can drop off your donations at the front office.

Let's come together to make this Teacher Appreciation Week at Pantherville absolutely phenomenal!

End-of-Year (EOY) Benchmark Testing for our Scholars will take place from Thursday, April 18th to Wednesday, April 24th. Here are the testing dates:

• April 18th: 8th Grade Science
• April 23rd: Reading
• April 24th: Math

To ensure a smooth testing experience, please make sure your students arrive at school before 8:30 am. Please make sure your scholar has had breakfast or enough time to grab breakfast from our cafeteria, allowing them to focus and perform well on the benchmark.

🎤🌟 Celebrating Adia Ledbetter, Shepard Middle School's Chorus Director! 🎶 Adia recently performed in the sold-out concert "Moon Child: Celebrating the Life and Music of Yusuf Salim" by Duke Arts. Her art collection "Ancestral Fabrics" premiered at the DPS Educators Art Show, and she gave a Jazz Lecture with Lois Deloatch. Adia also celebrates 10 years with Durham Tech Sings and will perform at Carnegie Hall later this year. 🎵✨

Project Sight visited Shepard on Thursday, March 14th, and the results of the vision screening were sent home with your child on Thursday.

The Freedom School Program will be held at Shepard IB Middle school this summer. Any rising 7th or 8th grader is eligible to attend this summer school program.

Any Middle School parents and families interested in their child/children participating in the Durham Freedom School ® program for the summer can receive an application and further information about the program from the front office. Please act fast, we only have 50 available spots for this program.

Parents, we continue to seek your support in helping your scholar come prepared with a charged Chromebook and their charger every day. As we move toward a more digital society, a lot of assignments are conducted online. Thank you for your support.

Lastly, if your child has lost their charger the cost is $38. You can see Ms. Leggett for information on how to purchase a new one.

🏫 Your scholar also received a 4-year high school plan and teacher recommendations for 9th grade on February 23rd.

Review and discuss courses with your scholar. Students began signing up for high school courses last week.

Black History Stage Show:
Join us for our Black History Stage Show on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 1:15 in the auditorium. Many scholars will be performing! If your scholar is participating and you’d like to watch, sign in at the front office or visit our school website for the Zoom link.

Chromebook Reminder:
Parents, please continue to support your scholar by ensuring they come prepared with a charged Chromebook and charger every day. As we embrace a more digital society, many assignments are conducted online.

About Us

Shepard Magnet Middle School is an IB school located in Durham, NC. Our students make up a diverse population that reflect our wider community. They are warmly embraced by our staff.

Students at Shepard are assigned to teams by their Common Core classes (i.e. Mathematics, Languages Arts, Science, and Humanities). This personal setting affords teachers and students the opportunity to get to know each other well. Plus, students take Discovery classes including Band, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Law & Forensics, Technology (computers and design, business), Visual arts, Chorus, and Health and Physical Education. In addition, Shepard students can also choose from a wide range of extracurricular activities including clubs, academic competitions, and school sports that meet a variety of interest.
