The Gift of Knowledge Academy is an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit K-2 school serving low-income families in the East Durham community. We believe that every child should be given the opportunity to reach their full potential and that begins with providing them with a firm foundation in literacy and math. We will have small class sizes – a 10 to 1 student/teacher ratio and we will use research-based reading instruction. Research conducted by several groups including The National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD) has determined that all reading instruction should include 5 components – phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension. The Gift of Knowledge Academy will incorporate these 5 components as well as writing, spelling, sight words, all while implementing a multisensory approach to learning. We are passionate about helping to eradicate illiteracy, decreasing the dropout rate, bridging the literacy gap, and helping to build the self-esteem and self-confidence of beginning readers and learners. We plan to open in the fall of 2016, and we will be located at the Family Life Enrichment Center at Greater Emmanuel Temple of Grace church. The Family Life Enrichment Center is a 22,000 square foot, $3.8M facility equipped with a full regulation size gym, theater, banquet facility, bookstore, administrative offices, classrooms and conference room space.
